DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Roads 703 and 717 Flood Repair
Delta National Forest
This project will repair flood damages on two National Forest System Roads, 703 and 717, in the Delta
National Forest in Sharkey County, Mississippi. Road 703 is 4.8 miles in length, while Road 717 is 4.5 miles long. Both roads are currently surfaced with crushed limestone aggregate over older layers of clay gravel surfacing. The project area is between Rolling Fork and Holly Bluff, Mississippi.
Remove the woody debris in the roadbed and from the maintained portion of the roadside. Debris is to be scattered beyond the wooded line away from any developed features such as side roads, campsites, trail heads, culverts, etc. This task is to be performed on all of Road 703 and the portion of Road 717 north of where it enters the wooded area.
Grade the roadbed to restore the road template. The road is to be crowned with a ½” per foot slope.
Apply #610 (crusher run) crushed limestone aggregate where directed by the COR. The locations will be determined immediately after the road is cleaned and graded. In most places the aggregate will be placed to a depth of 2” (one 25 ton truckload per 150’) or 3” (one 25 ton truckload per 100’) across the roadbed, while in other places where extensive washing occurred the placement will be more concentrated. After placement grade the edges to pull all aggregate back into the travel way and leave a straight, uniform edge. Grade the aggregate to create a smooth, uniform surface and compact.
Applicable specifications may be found in FHWA’s FP-03.
