Big Butt Trail, Contract Package 3 Page 1
Trail Log – Big Butt Trail (Base Bid Item)
Inspection Date: Nov. 4, 2009 Inspector Name: Bruce Lowe, Dwayne Stutzman Length: Sections to be bid 5.2 mi. (Total length 6.0 mi., including “no work” sections on private land) Trail Class 3 Designed Use: Hiking Average Width: 3’ Surface: Native General : Big Butt Trail runs north from the southern terminus at the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Cane River Gap on NC197. The trail is narrow and rustic. The first section of trail is highly compacted needing installation of grade dips, boxed steps/turnpike, berm removal and re-digging the trail up-slope to widen and stabilize the tread. The middle section ascending toward Big Butt is very steep needing the installation of many steps. The steepest section @ 199+00 presents a bottleneck to the transportation of imported materials. Steps and step cribs should be constructed first from stone found on site, native locust timber and thirdly from imported timbers. The final section of the trail follows an old road bed and is mainly in need of grade dips. An average of 50 grade dips per mile should be installed. The sections east of Big Butt Knob from 159+30 to 187+59, and north of Flat Springs Knob from 201+16 to 214+74 cross private land. No work is called out on these sections. Importation of materials beyond Big Butt Knob will be limited by narrow trail.
The trail logs illustrate some of the items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the logs is to give a description of the work, at a minimum; however they do not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item.

Trail Log – Buncombe Horse Range Trail - Section 1
Section 1, Base Bid Item: Starting at intersection with FS road just east of large wildlife opening (117+53) and ending at the spur trail to NC128 (250+10).
Inspection Date: October 28, 2009 Inspector Name: D. Stutzman, B. Lowe Section 1 Length: 2.5 miles Trail Class: 3 Designed Use: Horse Average Width: 3’ Surface: Native
General: The Buncombe Horse Trail lies within an Inventoried Roadless Area (IRA). Live trees along or adjacent to the trail cannot be removed for the creation of trail maintenance structures. Live trees may only be removed if they present a hazard to public health and safety. Standing dead locust trees, as well as imported locust logs, may be used for timber construction, as appropriate.
Trail is accessed via FS road which starts at South Toe River road, stationing (0+00) begins at trailhead at these road intersections. Trail maintenance section begins at station 117+53 where trail leaves FS road just before large wildlife opening on Buncombe Range Ridge. Trail maintenance section ends at intersection with spur trail to HWY 128 at station 250+10.
Much of the trail tread is in need of rehabilitation to restore positive drainage. General tread restoration includes berm removal; correcting trail creep or sloughing by moving the trail up-slope, creating proper outslope, restoring/cleaning/adding grade dips, or moving tread to outside edge of wide bench. Other general maintenance includes clearing the trail corridor per specifications, removal of blow-down across the trail, and re-grading the climbing turns and switch-backs. The finished trail should have an average of 50 grade dips per mile, with a higher density in wet sections. Additional work includes removal of hazard trees, addition of fill, and installing crib walls and terraced steps. Since this trail is maintained for horses, all steps should be installed with a minimum of 10-12 ft between risers.
The trail logs illustrate some of the items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the logs is to give a description of the work, at a minimum; however they do not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item.

Trail Log – Buncombe Range Horse Trail - Section 2A and 2B
Section 2A, Base Bid Item: Starting at spur trail to NC128 (Sta. 0+00) and ending Mt. Mitchell Trail sign (Sta. 202+06).
Section 2B, Bid Optional Item: Starting at Mt. Mitchell Trail sign (Sta. 202+06) and ending at intersection with Big Tom Trail (Sta. 324+77).
Inspection Date: October 29, 2009; December 17, 2009 Inspector Name: Bruce Lowe, Dwayne Stutzman, Fred Lashley Section 2A Length: 3.8 miles Section 2B Length: 2.3 miles Trail Class: 3 Designed Use: Horse Average Width: 3’ Surface: Soil, gravel, old roadbed / railroad grade General: The Buncombe Horse Trail lies within an Inventoried Roadless Area (IRA). Live trees along or adjacent to the trail cannot be removed for the creation of trail maintenance structures. Live trees may only be removed if they present a hazard to public health and safety. Standing dead locust trees, as well as imported locust logs, may be used for construction, as appropriate. Section 2A starts at spur trail to Hwy 128 and continues 3.8 miles to the Mt.
Mitchell Trail sign; where bid optional section 2B begins and continues 2.3 miles to intersection with Big Tom Trail.
Overall these sections of trail are on a gentle grade along an old railroad bed and are in relatively good condition.
Much of the trail has standing water on it and positive drainage needs to be restored by removing the berm to restore out-slope, moving trail to outside edge of bench, and by cleaning and installing grade dips. The finished trail should have an average of 50 grade dips per mile, with a higher density in wet sections.
The trail logs illustrate some of the items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the logs is to give a description of the work, at a minimum; however they do not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item.

Trail Log – Buncombe Range Horse Trail - Section 3
Section 3, Bid Optional Item: Begins at junction with Big Tom Trail (0+00) to ends at FS5523 (344+44) near Colbert Creek. Work ends at Station 314+29.
Inspection Dates: Dec 11, 2009 (Station 144+20 to 344+44) April 11, 2010 (Station 0+00 to 144+20) Inspector Name: Bruce Lowe, Eric Johnson: Dwayne Stutzman, Jody Maney Section 3 Length (requiring work): 6.0 miles Trail Class: 3 Designed Use: Horse Average Width: 3’ Surface: Native
This section starts at the junction with the Big Tom Trail (TR191A) and continues to its terminus at FS5523. This section of the Buncombe Horse Trail is in the worst condition of the three trail sections.
From Big Tom Trail intersection, BHT continues descending along the contour to Maple Camp Bald. The trail switch backs through the bald and is difficult to find due to thick blackberry briars. After leaving the bald the trail switchbacks down Maple Camp Ridge turns right and continues to switchback across steep side slope towards Maple Camp Creek. Corridor clearing per design parameters is required. Portions of the first section of trail are on a route that looks like it was not dug, but simply cut in.
The trail is steep, narrow, and rocky. It needs widening, clearing and basic trail restoration to define the trail and improve tread. There are numerous blow downs. After the first rocky section the trail is in fairly good condition, needing general maintenance, drainage improvements and surface improvements. The trail follows an old RR grade. There is a large creek crossing that poses difficulty for hikers to cross during periods of high water at 275+92. The trail can be accessed from either end or in the center so there are opportunities for parking, materials storage and staging.
The trail logs illustrate some of the items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the logs is to give a description of the work, at a minimum; however they do not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item.
