Section 945‐Concrete Trail Surfacing

Description

945.01 Work. This work consists of constructing concrete trail treads, including, excavation and backfilling, on an existing trailbed.

Materials

945.02 Materials

Aggregate shall conform to the requirements of Federal Specifications SS‐A‐281 Classes 1 and 2 and shall be well graded from fine to coarse within designated limits. Cement, Portland, shall comply with ASTM Designation C150, Type 1. Supplier shall provide mill certification of compliance with specification. Water shall be clean, fresh, and free from injurious amounts of minerals or foreign substances.

Additives

Reinforcing steel shall comply with ASTM Designation A 615, intermediate grade 40 unless otherwise shown. Reinforcing mesh shall comply with ASTM Designation A 185 and shall be gauge and mesh indicated.

Forms may be wood, plywood or metal. Form oil shall be the nonstaining type.

All concrete shall have a minimum "Compressive Strength" of 3000 psi at 28 days. The design of the concrete mixture shall be the responsibility of the Contractor.

Construction

945.03 General. Construct concrete tread at locations SHOWN ON THE DRAWING or DESIGNATED ON

THE GROUND.

Forms shall be built tight, in proper alignment, and adequate to resist the stresses of concrete placement without deformation. Forms shall be constructed to produce the required concrete surface.

Contraction joints shall be formed as indicated on the drawings.

"Ready‐Mixed Concrete" may be employed if the time interval between mixing at the plant and discharge into the form does not exceed 1‐1/2 hours. All concrete shall be placed within 1‐1/2 hours from the time of mixing. No concrete shall be placed after it has started its initial set.

Concrete shall be placed in such a manner as to avoid segregation of the mixture, shall be spread in horizontal layers when practicable, and shall not be freely dropped more than 5 feet. Mechanical vibrators shall be used for consolidation of concrete and shall be consolidated within 15 minutes after placement. If consolidation of concrete with mechanical vibrators is impractical, hand tamping, rodding, and spading will be permitted. A minimum of two vibrators, in working order, shall be on the job during concrete placement. Concrete plant standards and truck mixer and agitator standards shall be as recommended by the National Ready Mix Association.

945.04 Finishing

All finishes shall be made without use of cement or other dusting materials. Concrete shall be struck to proper grade and surface finished with float trowels.

Following the surface testing and correction, and after all excess moisture has disappeared, but before the application of curing compound, the concrete pavement surface shall be given a grooved texture with a set of spring steel tines. The grooves shall be perpendicular to the center line of the pavement, unless otherwise shown on the plans. Down pressure on the pavement surface shall be maintained at all times during texturing so as to obtain uniform texturing.

The spring steel tines of the grooving device shall be rectangular in cross section, approximately 1/8” wide and placed on ¾ “ centers. The tines shall be of sufficient length, thickness, and resilience to form grooves not less than 3/16” deep in the fresh concrete surface in one pass. Final texture shall be uniform in appearance with substantially all grooves having a depth of 3/16”. The capability of the tines to provide an acceptable texture shall be demonstrated to the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) prior to approval for use.

Concrete shall be protected against rapid drying and kept moist for seven days by covering with curing paper with edges sealed, burlap, canvas, Type 1‐D or Type 2 liquid membrane curing compounds, or by sprinkling.

The COR on the project may make test cylinders from the concrete being incorporated in the project and send them to a Forest Service‐approved laboratory for testing. Cost of testing will be paid by the Government.

Slump testing will be performed by the COR in accordance with ASTM Standard Method C143. Slump shall not exceed 3" for vibrated concrete or 5" for non‐vibrated concrete.

945.05 Excavation. The existing ground upon which the concrete trail treads is to be placed shall be shaped to the required lines and grades

Measurement

Section 955‐Riprap

Description

955.01 Work. This work consists of furnishing and placing riprap for bank and slope protection, and for erosion control.

Materials

955.02 Use materials meeting the requirements of Sections 961 and 964.

The stone shall be durable, angular, field or quarry stones, resistant to weather and water action, which are sound, hard and free from laminations, fractures, or other structural defects, and shall meet the size distribution requirements for the class specified in the contract documents . Rounded stone or boulders will not be accepted.

Size Distribution:

Large Riprap: At least 60 percent of the individual stones shall have a volume of 8 cubic feet or more. Not more than 10 percent of the stone shall have a perimeter of less than 24 inches when measured in the smallest section.

Medium Riprap: At least 50 percent of the individual stones shall have a volume of 2 cubic feet or more. Not more than 10 percent of the stone shall have a perimeter of less than 18 inches when measured in the smallest section.

Small Riprap: No more than 10 percent of the individual stones shall have a perimeter less than 12 inches in the smallest section. All of the stones shall have a volume less than ½ cubic foot.

Construction

955.03 General. Install riprap at locations SHOWN ON THE DRAWING or DESIGNATED ON THE

GROUND.

955.04 Excavation. The slope upon which the riprap is to be placed shall be shaped to the required lines and grades. Construct a horizontal bench into undisturbed material and compact it as a foundation for the toe of the riprap. The surface shall be roughened to provide a surface to which the base stones will key and be firmly bedded. Foundation trenches shall be excavated along the toe of the slope to receive the base stones and provide a footing. These trenches shall be of sufficient width and extend a minimum of 2 feet below the streambed or natural ground surface. Slopes and trenches shall be approved before placing riprap.

955.05 Rock Placement. Install stones by hand placing the rock , with the larger rock in the bottom layers. The voids between the larger stones shall be filled with smaller stones. This shall be done in such a manner that they do not prevent the interlocking of the larger stones. The finished exposed surfaces shall present a broken joint surface on which voids are reasonably well filled.

The geotextile fabric shall be placed on smooth, uniform slope, loosely enough to conform to minor surface irregularities. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations for making laps and for fastening and securing.

Measurement

955.06 Method. Measure the quantities in accordance with Section 906.

Payment

955.07 Basis. Pay for the accepted quantities in accordance with Section 906 at the contract unit price for each PAY ITEM SHOWN IN THE SCHEDULE OF ITEMS.
