Marking Guides

General Marking Instructions

These timber sales will be cut tree marked using the national designated paint scheme. All paint provided will be accounted for throughout the life of this contract. The designated COR and district paint custodian will oversee the accountability procedures and go over in detail the exact procedures to be used prior to issuing any tree marking paint. If a problem is discovered by either party that party will notify the other immediately so corrective action can be taken.

Basal Area is generally the most important criteria for choosing how many trees to mark for harvest. Residual BA for each stand is given in the attached prescriptions. The criteria for selecting which trees to harvest depends on a number of factors that are described in these prescriptions. Overall, it is the quality of the residual stand that is most important.

DBH Marks:

All DBH marks will be slashes at least 2” (inches) wide and will cover approximately 75% of the trees circumference. This will require 2 or 3 swipes of paint for each slash. DBH marks will be made at not less than 4 ½ feet and not higher than 6 ½ feet from the ground. This technique will be used on both pulpwood and sawtimber. Marking timber should be avoided during extreme wet weather, or when the boles of standing timber are saturated and wet to the touch.

The contractor should contact the COR for site specific details and direction when this saturation occurs. Paint will be expected to last a minimum of 3 years. If the contractor fails to use good judgment, he/she will remark the problem area with no adjustment in total acres. The Forest Service will supply only additional paint. The COR will review marking language and technique with contractor prior to starting first unit.

Stump Marks:

All marked trees require stump marks. Stump marks must intersect the ground and be located in a moss free area, on the downhill side of the stump. This may require scraping off moss/debris prior to painting the stump.

Cruise design: Noontime (Item #1)

This is a Sample Tree Measure Cruise – all trees to be cut in units 1,2,3,6,7,8,9 & 10 will be marked and tallied. All Jack Pine > 5” DBH in units 4,5 & 11 will be tallied only. Stump marking of these trees will not be required. Sample populations have been stratified by payment unit number. Within each payment unit (stratum) sample groups have been defined by product group (see table below).

** Meaning that one in every 250 Red Pine Sawtimber trees marked/tallied will need to be cruised.

Species will not be sampled separately. The species of your sample tree is the species that will be recorded. To avoid bias and clumping of tallies, a random start should be used for each sample group at the start of marking in each payment unit. Select a random interval that is less than the required sample interval for the first tally in each sample group. Thereafter, sample at the specified sample interval.

The specific merchantability specification and minimum piece specification requirements for each sample group will be handed out and gone over in detail by the COR prior to starting the first payment unit.

Sample Cruise trees within each sample group will be flagged and critical information recorded on flagging. This will be done in each payment unit. This critical cruise information will be discussed in detail by the COR prior to starting the first payment unit.

Payment Unit Cards:

Payment unit tally cards provided to the Contractor at the pre-work meeting will be filled out by Contractor for each Payment Unit. All sample tree information will be legibly recorded on “Rite in the Rain” paper tally forms. Errors are most easily and accurately corrected at the data source. A visual edit of the data will be made before leaving the sample tree.

Commercial Thinning:

Narrative: Stocking densities range from 130 sq.ft./acre to 240 sq.ft./acre. Emphasize removal of red pine less than 10 inches in DBH.. Retain other species for diversity, and larger DBH classes to promote old growth characteristics. Create skid trails as needed to remove trees that are designated for harvest.

For wildlife: Retain all snags > 9” DBH except those that need to be removed to facilitate harvesting operations. Where they occur, retain at least 4 mast/den trees per acre. These trees are in addition to the minimum stocking in desirable trees.

Narrative (Include descriptions to rotation age): Stands are being managed to produce red pine sawtimber. Snags may be created to meet Forest Plan guidelines.

Commercial Thinning:

Narrative: This is a second thinning for these stands. Stocking densities range from as low as 30 sq.ft./acre to over 170 sq.ft./acre but are generally between 110 and 150.

Concentrate on spacing and releasing potential crop trees on at least two sides. Where needed, establish skid trails 12-15 feet wide and leave the equivalent of two leave rows in between the skid trails. In areas of high stocking densities, thin the leave row as needed to release potential crop trees. Discriminate against jack pine, poor formed hardwoods, and suppressed red pine. Jack pine in the 6 and 8 inch diameter classes are first priority for removal. Retain mature oak( >14”DBH), supercanopy red and white pine, and aspen where possible. In areas of low stocking densities, mark only those trees that need to be removed to provide access or release crop trees. In areas of stocking over 200 sq.ft.ac., do not remove more than 1/2 of the basal area.

For wildlife: Retain all snags > 9” DBH except those that need to be removed to facilitate harvesting or burning operations. Where they occur, retain at least 4 mast/den trees per acre. These trees are in addition to the minimum stocking in desirable trees.

Narrative (Include descriptions to rotation age): Stands are being managed to produce jack pine and oak pulpwood. Objective is to move them toward a less volatile forest type by increasing the amount of oak and aspen and decreasing the amount of jack pine.

Narrative: Harvest all jack pine except those required for wildlife or visuals. Retain all white oaks plus any other oaks larger than 9” DBH. Retain any “legacy” red and white pine.

There is less than 10 sq.ft. in oaks in the size classes larger than 9” in all of these stands except compartment 44 stand 9, which has 24 sq. ft. /acre greater than 9”. Retain smaller oaks as needed to insure 4 mast trees/acre are retained.

For wildlife and visuals: Dead trees will be left to provide dens and snags. Oaks will provide large snags as they senesce and die. In the interim they will provide acorns for regeneration and hard mast.

Criteria for visual management along F-97 and Sunrise Road is described above.

“Registered in the CCR database” means that—

The DUNS number will be used by the Contracting Officer to verify that the offeror is registered in the CCR database.

(c) If the offeror does not have a DUNS number, it should contact Dun and Bradstreet directly to obtain one.

(1) An offeror may obtain a DUNS number—

To remain registered in the CCR database after the initial registration, the Contractor is required to review and update on an annual basis from the date of initial registration or subsequent updates its information in the CCR database to ensure it is current, accurate and complete.
