Water System Improvements on the Superior National Forest Questions and Answers 1 - Specifications call for minimum size 20" access to the tank. Local tank manufacturers only make 16” access. Non-local’s make 22” access. Would consideration be given to 16" access since shipping cost would be less? ANSWER: We want at least a 20” opening.
2 - I didn't notice any requirements regarding tank color, so I assume that any color is acceptable so long as the tank meets structural specifications and is for potable water systems. Please clarify. ANSWER: Color is not an issue.
3 - The specifications call for a 4" and a 1" bulkhead fitting for each tank. However, from the drawings, it appears that the outlet line is 2" at the Fall Lake Campground location. Please confirm if a 4" or 2" bulkhead fitting is needed for the Fall Lake tank. Are bulkhead fittings to be field installed or factory installed? If they are to be factory installed, should this be done as is "typical" for such water tanks or will installation locations be provided? ANSWER: We want both tanks to have factory installed 4” bulkhead fittings. “As typical” is fine for locations provided they are 4”. The existing supply pipe at Tofte is 4”. The existing supply pipe at Fall Lake is 2”. I wanted to reduce at the tank but be able to change the supply pipe size in the future.
4. The scale on page C-3 of the plans doesn’t seem to fit. If it is in fact 1:1 then I will assume that means 1 inch is 1 foot. ANSWER: Plot scale for C-3 is 1:2 (Sheet size B 11x17) plan scale is 1”=10’.
5. All pipe outside of the building is HDPE including the 4”? And does the pipes going into and out of the buildings dive straight down to 8 feet of bury? ANSWER: Fall Lake supply is 2" HDPE sloped to drain shallow bury. Tofte is 4" HDPE or ductile iron, bury below frost-line, then as quickly as feasible to 8', I did not want to require insulation if at all possible.
6. The valve box indicated on page C-1a underneath the location of the water tower, is that a new one that needs to be installed or one that is existing and remains? ANSWER: Valve box is existing and will remain.
7. I am wondering if you know the specs of the water tower, (i.e. weight, height, width) for demolition purposes? ANSWER: Water tower is an elevated 10,000 gallon tank which is: 35' high(total height),tank diameter of 12', w/catwalk max dia. is 18' and weight is approximately 12,000 Lbs.
8. Does the Forestry have sites nearby for the disposal of dirt as well as trees, stumps, and brush as they have indicated in the specifications? ANSWER: We will designate disposal site for trees, stumps, etc. at Tofte on site. There should be no such debris at Fall Lake, if we end up with any, we will designate a site nearby.
