Scope of Work

Geologic Investigation

Conewango Watershed Dams 3 and 6

Bates and Cherry Creek, New York

The NRCS is preparing designs to rehabilitate these dams.

This Scope highlights the work and shows the location of the sites to be investigated.

The work consists of providing the equipment and crew to access and drill 7 borings at Conewango Dam 3 and 7 borings at Conewango Dam 6. The work also includes mobilizing a tracked excavator and excavating test pits at each dam. All borings at Site 3 will be sampled at 5 foot intervals and borings at Dam # 6 will be sampled continuously. Approximate locations of the proposed test pits and borings are shown on the attached sheets.

Previous boring and test pit logs and locations are attached.

SITE 3

Borings

The borings to be drilled at Site 3 in Bates, New York are intended to locate a borrow area and confirm the original soil investigation in the auxiliary spillway.

One (1) boring will be drilled to a depth of 40 feet in the auxiliary spillway and six

(6) borings will be drilled to a depth of 26 feet in a proposed borrow area located north of the existing auxiliary spillway, and east of the pond in an area of forest that has been previously logged for timber (See attached map)

Test Pits

Test pits will be excavated in the proposed borrow are shown and are shown approximately on the attached drawings. Eight hrs of excavator time is estimated at this dam.

SITE 6

Borings

Borings will be drilled at Site 6 in Cherry Creek, NY to gather subsurface data at locations as shown approximately on the enclosed drawing. Three borings are located on the earthen floor of the auxiliary spillway and four are located in the wooded area south of the spillway.

There will be one formal site showing for this work on January 26th, 2010.

Interested contractors shall assemble at the Cherry Creek Town Highway Garage, 6914 Main Street, Cherry Creek, NY (716) 296-5721 . Borings and test pits will be staked in the field prior to the showing. If, due to hazardous weather the site showing can’t be held on the 26th it will be rescheduled for the same time and location on the following day, January 27.

We ask that interested contractors notify Laureen Eipp, Contracting Officer, NRCS Syracuse at 315-477-6522 or at laureen.eipp@ny.usda.gov of their intent to attend the showing. In this way, we can make immediate notice should the site showing be postponed due to weather conditions.

The work is to be completed according to specifications attached to this scope of work. This project will require one rotary drill rig and an experienced crew capable of taking soil samples to a depth of 50 feet. Borings are to be advanced with hollow stem augers.

Standard penetration tests and split spoon samples are to be performed at five foot intervals at Dam #3 and continuously from the ground surface to proposed depths or to bedrock refusal at Dam #6.

Note that white airtight caps on soil sample jars are required.

Test pits

Test pitting will require a tracked excavator with skilled operator capable of excavating test pits to a depth of 15 feet. Machine breakdowns exceeding 15 minutes will be deducted from the hourly rate. The test pits are to be performed no earlier than the second day after mobilization of the drilling rig. The test pits will be excavated at each dam while the drilling is also taking place at the same dam, to allow for logging and inspection by the

NRCS.

The work is to be bid according to the attached bid schedule. Normal hours of work are from 7:30 - 4:00.

Dam #3

Access Dam #6

LOCATIONS and ACCESS

Conewango Watershed Dam # 3 is located approximately 800 feet west of Bates Road County Road 64, in Bates, New York as shown on the attached map. The work area will be accessed from Bates Road over the earthen spillway and thence west to the boring locations.

Conewango Watershed Dam # 6 is located in the Town of Cherry Creek about

1.5 miles west of the town center and approximately 2500 feet north of County Road 29 as shown on the attached map. The work will be accessed from a dirt farm lane off County Road 29 as shown.

Access roads will be plowed to allow travel with 4 wheel drive vehicles by the County prior to the work and after significant snowfalls. The government makes no guarantee the dirt lanes will be completely free of snow.

It is the contractor’s responsibility to determine the appropriate drill rig and equipment required to access the boring locations and accomplish the work without causing damage to private property, the top of dams, the embankment, or the auxiliary spillway by his vehicles.

All borings are required to be backfilled with onsite materials or sand and gravel and capped with 5 feet of bentonite as per specification # 10. All test pits will be backfilled with the excavated soil compacted with the bucket and smoothed to level with the ground surface at completion.

At the completion of the project all borings and test pits will be inspected by the NRCS employee to ensure they are filled to the surface and do not pose a safety hazard.

An NRCS employee will be on site during the investigation to inspect the work, log the soil and rock, as well as guide the investigation.
