5.0 DRIVE SAMPLE BORING - CONTINUOUS
5.1 SCOPE
This specification includes advancing a boring for the purpose of sampling and testing the subsoil.
The sampling is intended to determine the thickness, arrangement and the various physical properties of the soil strata as they occur in situ. Standard penetration tests shall be performed according to ASTM D1586-99, Standard Test Method for Penetration Test and Split-Barrel Sampling of Soils to a depth determined by the COR.
5.2 EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES
Standard 24-inch long, 2 or 3-inch O.D. drive samplers with ball check valves shall be used as directed by the Contracting Officer. The drive shoe shall be of hardened steel and the cutting edge shall be maintained in good condition as required by the Government Representative.
The drive weight assembly to be used with the 2-inch O.D. drive sampler shall consist of a 140 lb.
+ 5 lb. weight, a driving head and a guide permitting a free fall of 30 inches. A 300 lb. + 10 lb.
drive weight assembly shall be used with the 3-inch O.D. sampler. The 300 lb. and 3-inch O.D.
sampler shall be used as directed by the COR.
Accessory equipment includes retaining baskets, labels, sample jars, sealing wax and other necessary supplies.
5.3 PROCEDURE
The boring shall be drilled to the depth required by the use of hollow stem augers, cutting or chopping bits, tricone bits, or other bits approved by the COR. Casing will be required where rock coring or special tests are to be performed. Generally, hollow stem augers shall be used to advance the borings. When casing is used, water ports in the approved bit shall be arranged such that there is no jetting action of the drilling fluid ahead of the bit. Bottom discharge bits or jetting through an open sampler and sampling at the desired elevation will not be permitted. With the sampler resting on the bottom of the hole it shall be driven into the subsoil in six-inch increments with a 140 lb.
hammer for a 24-inch total drive or to refusal. The number of blows required for each six-inches of penetration will be recorded by the driller.
5.3.1 CASING
Where required, borings shall be cased with a 3-inch minimum inside (I.D.) diameter flush joint casing. The casing shall be driven closely following the bit to prevent any overlying material from contaminating the sample. At no time shall the casing be driven beyond the sampling elevation.
Drilling fluid additives may be approved for use by the COR where no permeability or pressure tests are to be performed.
When casing is advanced by driving, the weight of the drive hammer shall be 300 pounds unless heavier hammers are authorized by the COR.
5.3.2 TESTS
Standard penetration tests will be performed in a continuous manner to a depth determined by the COR. Thereafter, samples shall be taken at five foot intervals or at every change in stratum, or as determined by the COR.
The sampler shall be raised to the surface and opened. In saturated silt and sand the drill rods shall be withdrawn carefully to prevent loosening of the material in the hole. Water level in the hole shall be kept at or slightly above the water table during the sampling operations.
5.3.3 SAMPLES AND CONTAINERS
If a sample is not recovered or is found unsatisfactory as to size or condition, a second attempt shall be made to obtain a satisfactory sample before advancing the boring to a lower depth.
Overdriving the spoon to ensure sample recovery will be permitted only upon approval by the Contracting Officer in each case.
The soil sample will be removed from the sampler and placed in a glass jar with white cap which will be closed with a moisture proof lid.
Each sample will be logged according to the Unified Soil Classification System and placed in a airtight sample jar without ramming. Each type of material from each sample will be placed in a separate container and labeled with the following information:
a . State
b. Location
c. Project name
d. Drill hole number
e. Depth
