AMENDMENT 1

The following questions and answers are provided:

(1) Timber Deck (page 5 of 6)- 4”x8” Minimum

Would you accept a 2” or 3”? Since the bridge is so narrow it does not affect the performance and it would be more cost effective. The Forest Service is specifying a 4” thick minimum decking to lengthen the service life of the decking since it will not be pressure treated.

Clarification:

Top Rail Height:

In the drawing you have a 4’-6” min for bike use. Per AASHTO LRFD 2010 sections 13.8.1 and 13.9.2, both pedestrian and bicycle railing needs to be a minimum of 42" above the top of the path. Would you like to us to quote the 42” to be more cost effective? The Forest Service has Trail bridge Design Criteria that is listed in the

Forest Service Handbook. This particular bridge used the “Mountain Bike” Trail design Use Category which called for a Top of Rail/Top of Truss height of 54”. The reference to this is “Table1 - Trail bridge design criteria (Adapted from FSH 7709.56b, section 7.69, exhibit 01)”. This can be found on the website:

Bridge Detail (page 6 of 6)

Clarification on deck planks (by others): supplied by bridge supplier and shipped installed at fabricators facility? The Forest Service will purchase the decking from another vendor and install the decking planks in house. The Bridge Supplier only provides the Shop Drawings for the decking showing the dimensions and the fabrication details for all cuts and hole boring and also an installation plan for the connection of decking planks to the superstructure.

Would you be open to other wood options for decking? The decking planks will be purchased by the

Forest Service from another vendor. On page 6 of 6 the detail in the top right corner shows items to be supplied by the bridge supplier and items supplied by “Others”.

CORRECTION: Dimension correction for the footing on Drawing Sheet 6 of 6. Attached separately.
