This contract requires an extensive photo record because of the historical nature of the Timberline Lodge.

Safety and securing the construction area will be VERY important during this project.

Timberline Lodge uses generator power every Wednesday from 10 am to noon.

A technical discussion followed and several questions with the corresponding clarification / answers are listed below:

Q1) What is meant by “cleaning the remaining structure” in Section C.1?

A1) Construction debris must be cleaned and removed from the project site.

Q2) Does the Forest Service anticipate that work will start this year?

A2) By the time a contract is awarded and bonding is received, it is anticipated that the weather will preclude the contractor from performing on-site work. The Notice To Proceed can be issued so that the engineered scaffolding design and other pre-site work can be accomplished without using the 60 contract performance days.

Q3) A suggestion was made that the Architect who designed the plans and specifications should be brought back on board in case they are needed to answer questions, etc.

A3) That would be a possibility if needed.

Q4) Is the wire mesh that is currently around the chimney going back on?

A4) No. It is only there because of current safety issues with the loose stones.

Q5) Are the hours of operation really only 9:00 am to 6:00 pm?

A5) Yes. The contractor will need to be sensitive to the fact that Timberline Lodge will still be in use during the project. Coordination will be extremely important to ensure that a quality experience is still had by the Lodge’s guests.

Q6) Describe what the scaffolding should look like?

A6) It is up to the contractor’s engineer who designs and stamps the scaffolding plan to make that decision for review and approval by the Government.

Q7) Can the contractor use the paved access path to the site?

A7) The contractor can use the approximately 9 ft. path to pull up and unload materials to the site then the vehicle would need to be removed.

Q8) Will use of a portable generator be allowed?

A8) No. The area around the construction site is the dining area and generator noise would not be acceptable. The contractor should have all the power needed with the 120V outlet outside and with the power box.

Q9) Where is the nearest power panel?

A9) It is located in the West attic (access to the Head House chimney inside). As stated in the soliciation, the Forest Service / Timberline Lodge will be providing the electrical utility for hook up. The contractor will have to run a cable from the 200Amp panel in the West attic up through the Head House chimney and to a power box they provide with outlets (approximately 150’ of power cable, two pole breakers for the panel, and power box with outlets). Extension cords can be run from the power box for their electrical needs.

Q10) What is needed for a safety perimeter around the scaffolding?

A10) The scaffolding will be erected on the rear deck and will require a 15’ safety perimeter of fencing to ensure public safety. The entire patio area cannot be blocked off for the scaffold and safety fencing. A minimum 6’ walkway must be established for ADA access around the rear of the building.

Q11) Will equipment be allowed on the concrete patio?

A11) Construction area(s) will be designated at the prework meeting.

Q12) Would a crane be allowed to get the weathervane off the roof if needed?

A12) Yes with close coordination with the Lodge.

Q13) If stones need to be replaced is there still access to the quarry?

A13) If additional stones are needed the Forest Service would provide those to the contractor.

Q14) Will the lead cap on the chimney need to be replaced?

A14) Yes – refer to the drawings.

Q15) What work needs done on the weather vane?

A15) The weater vane needs cleaned up and restored.
