SPECIAL PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

For

HYALITE LAKE LOOP

TRAIL – Phase II

U.S.D.A. FOREST SERVICE

CUSTER GALLATIN NATIONAL FOREST

BOZEMAN RANGER DISTRICT

January 2017

Included Special Project Specifications:

Number Description

- Preface

105 Control of Material 152 Government Survey and Staking 156 Public Traffic 157 Soil Erosion Control 911 Clearing & Grubbing 912 Excavation & Embankment 301 Aggregate Courses 703 Aggregate

105 - Control of Material

105.02 Material Sources

Add the following before the first paragraph.

Sources have been designated for this project as follows:

Aggregate Base Surfacing – Contractor Furnished

Add the following to section (b) Contractor-located sources.

The contractor shall provide to the CO certification that aggregate has come from a source with an established Weed Management Plan. The Contractor will provide to the CO a copy of the Weed Management Plan if requested.

152 - Government Survey and Staking

The Government shall provide construction staking for the entire project. The Contractor shall provide a reasonable effort to protect Government Staking.

156 - Public Traffic

156.03 Accommodating Traffic During Work.

Trails on the West Side of the Lake – The Contractor shall operate in a manner as to allow public traffic when safe. During any tree felling operation, the contractor will provide flaggers on both sides of the operation. Advance “Trail Work” signs shall be erected anytime work is being accomplished by the contractor. At the end of any work day, the Contractor shall make the trail passable to the public. The Contractor is not allowed to work during weekends.

Trail on the East side of the Lake – The contractor shall post the “Trail Work – Closed” signs on either end of the work. The Contractor is not allowed to work during weekends. During any tree felling operation, the contractor will provide flaggers on both sides of the operation.

157 - Soil Erosion Control around Culverts

157.03 General

Delete the entire subsection and replace with the following:

Prior to the start of construction, submit a written plan that provides permanent and temporary erosion control measures to minimize erosion and sedimentation during and after construction. Do not begin work until the necessary controls for that particular phase of work have been implemented. Do not modify the type, size, or location of any control. An alternate erosion control plan with all necessary permits may be submitted 30 days before intended use.

Incorporate all permanent erosion control features into the project at the earliest practicable time, as outlined in the approved plan.

When erosion control measures are not functioning as intended, immediately take corrective action.

911 – Clearing & Grubbing

911.06 Disposal of clearing Slash, Logs, Stumps, Brush, and Roots

ADD:

All felled or previously downed trees shall be completely limbed and sawn into lengths no longer that 6 feet. The slash shall be machine or hand scattered outside the clearing limits with no concentrations. Stumps shall be scattered outside the clearing limits.

Scattering slash shall be in as an aesthetically pleasing manner as possible. This will involve scattering slash with no concentrations free of windrows, free of soil, stumps removed or sawn to ground level outside of the 8’ trailway, logs scattered randomly, etc. The goal is to scatter the slash in a manner that reasonable mimics the natural surroundings.

In areas with high levels of slash, the contractor may, with the approval of the CO, pile the slash in burn piles in locations designated by the CO, for later burning by the Forest Service.

912 – Excavation and Embankment

REPLACE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS WITH:

912.03 Use and Disposal of Excavated Material.

Remove and save by windrowing duff and debris from within the trailway limits. Then following excavation and embankment, spread on cuts and fills.

Use all mineral soils within the 8’ wide trailbed to the satisfaction of the CO. Drift the mineral soils ahead and back to smooth out the trail grade imperfections. Rock not used within the trailbed may be scattered outside the clearing limits.

APPEND THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS WITH:

912.04 Trailway Excavation and Embankment

The finished 8- feet trailway shall be smooth and ready for aggregate surfacing as shown on the drawings. The trailway shall be compacted with a minimum of two passes of a smooth drum vibratory roller.

912.05 Trailbed Finish.

Finish trailbed as shown on the drawings. The finish shall be ready for aggregate surfacing.

301 - Aggregate Courses

301.01 Work.

Add the following:

Work includes producing aggregate by pit-run, grid rolling, screening, or crushing methods, or placing Contractor-furnished aggregate.

301.03 General.

Request approval in writing of the roadbed before placing aggregate.

If the aggregate is produced and stockpiled before placement, handle and stockpiled according to Section 320. Establish stockpile sites at locations approved. Clear and grub stockpile sites according to Section 201.

301.04 Mixing and Spreading.

Delete the first two sentences of the first paragraph and add the following:

Adjust the moisture content to obtain a uniform mixture with a moisture content within 2 percent of the optimum moisture content. Spread the aggregate in a uniform layer, with no segregation of size, and to a loose depth that will provide the required compacted thickness.

When placing aggregate over geotextile, place aggregate in a single lift to the full depth specified.

Route and distribute hauling and leveling equipment over the width and length of each layer.

301.05 Compacting

Delete the first and third paragraphs and add the following:

Compact the aggregate using one of the following methods as specified:

(a) Compaction A. Compact the aggregate by operating spreading and hauling equipment over the full width of each aggregate layer.

(b) Compaction B. Moisten or dry the aggregate to a uniform moisture content between 5 and 7 percent based on total dry weight of the mixture. Operate rollers to remove all visible displacement.

(c) Compaction C. Compact each layer of aggregate to a density of at least 95 per-cent of the maximum density, as determined by AASHTO T 99, method C or D.

(1) Compaction C-1. Compact each layer of aggregate to a density of at least 96 percent of the maximum density, as determined by the Modified Marshall Hammer Compaction Method (available upon request from USDA Forest Service, Regional Materials Engineering Center, P.O.

Box 7669, Missoula, MT 59807).

(d) Compaction D. Compact each layer of aggregate to a density of at least 95 per-cent of the maximum density, as determined by AASHTO T 180, method C or D.

(1) Compaction D-1. Compact each layer of aggregate to a density of at least 100 percent of the maximum density as determined by the Modified Marshall Hammer Compaction Method (available upon request from USDA Forest Service, Regional Materials Engineering Center, P.O.

Box 7669, Missoula, MT 59807).

(e) Compaction E. Operate rollers and compact as specified in Subsection 204.11(a).

For all compaction methods, blade the surface of each layer during the compaction operations to remove irregularities and produce a smooth, even surface. When a density requirement is specified, determine the in place density and moisture content according to AASHTO T 310 or other approved test procedures.

301.06 Surface Tolerance.

Add the following:

Thickness and Width requirements:

The maximum variation from the compacted specified thickness is ½ inch.

703 - Aggregate

703.03 Granular Backfill.

(c) Aggregate Base, Surfacing, and Course Granular Backfill. Furnish backfill material that consists of clean, hard durable particles or fragments of crushed stone, crushed slag or crushed gravel meeting the gradation shown below.

Sieve Size Percent Passing 1 inch 100 ¾ inch 75 to 100 No. 4 0 to 60
