GENERAL NOTES
1. ITEM 201.01 Clearing and Grubbing. The level of brushing is indicated in the trail log as either medium or heavy. If neither heavy nor medium brushing is indicated assume there is light brushing. Note that the level of brushing is an estimation and the contractor should still conduct his/her own site investigations to verify this estimation.
2. ITEM 204.01 Excavation. The levels of excavation will vary with the percent grade of the side hill.
Typical Cross Sections, sheet 19, illustrates the level of excavation required for various sections of trail. The level of excavation 10-30% or 30-60% is noted in the trail log under 204.01. Note that the level of excavation is an estimation and the contractor should still conduct his/her own site investigations to verify this estimation. Also note that slash barriers to prevent trail cutting is incidental to excavation where it is specified in the trail log. The slash barriers should be the minimum required to channel motorized users onto the trail and can be constructed from rocks and trees unearthed in the excavation process.
3. New construction includes clearing and grubbing (ITEM 201.01) and excavation (ITEM 204.01).
4. ITEM 204.76 Rock Excavation. The level of rock excavation is indicated in the trail log as either minor (•), major (••), or severe (•••). Minor - the surveyor could walk almost entirely on grade without scrambling. Major - Many large diameter rocks were present and scrambling was required to stay on flagline. Severe - Impassable or surveyor had to climb, not scramble, over rocks. Note that the level of rock excavation is an estimation and the contractor should still conduct his/her own site investigations to verify this estimation
5. A blasting plan is required for all project bids (Item B only).
6. No construction will be permitted during regular rifle hunting season.
7. ITEM 204.11 All fill and tread sections must be compacted with suitable equipment. Operate compaction equipment over full width of tread until visible deformation of the layer ceases or, when using a sheepsfoot roller, the roller “walks out” of the layer. Make at least three passes.
8. ITEM 204.30 ATV Switchback.. Insloped turn grade throughout will be measured. Contractors must make every attempt to reduce the grade throughout the turn to less than 12%. Clearing and Grubbing, and Excavation are incidental to switchback construction.
9. ITEM 204.31 CT (Climbing Turn). A turn in the trail without a level landing to achieve a gain in elevation. The uphill tread approach to the turn will be inlsoped for at least 15 ft. and the downhill approach will be outsloped for at least 15 ft. The grade of the inlsoped and outsloped
Sheet 7 tread must be at least 3%. Clearing and Grubbing, and Excavation are incidental to climbing turn construction.
10. ITEM 204.20 Rock Turnpike. Contractor shall locate all stockpiles for turnpike construction. The stockpile must be approved by the COR prior to any hauling of material. Clearing and Grubbing and Excavation are incidental to the turnpike construction. Note that in some instances the haul distance could exceed 4,000 feet. In the event of no suitable rock within 200 feet of the turnpike location, the contractor may submit in writing a request to use the treated 10 inch diameter logs for retainers.
11. ITEM 557.05 Bridge, Fabricated and Erected
a. TIMBER & LUMBER: Solid Solid sawn timber members shall conform to the requirements of the grading rules agency for the species. GLUED-LAMINATED STRINGERS shall be Combination Symbol 24F-V4, Species - DF/DF wet condition use and industrial appearance.
b. TREATMENT: For all members preservative treatment shall be in accordance with the current AWPA Specification. Treatment will comply with the requirements of the current edition of WWPI's "Best Management practices for the Use of Treated Wood in Aquatic Environments". All Glued-Laminated members shall be in accordance with AWPA C28. All Solid Sawn Members must be in accordance with AWPA C2.
c. FIELD TREATMENT: Copper Napthenate (2% solution) shall be furnished for field treating of wood. All abrasions and field cuts - approved by the C.O. - shall be carefully trimmed and given three brush coats of the field treatment solution. Field drilling of bolt and nail holes, as approved by the COR, shalll be poured full of preservative prior to inserting the fasteners. COR or Inspector must be on site for all field treatment.
d. HARDWARE: All hardware shall be galvanized and shall meet the requirements of AASHTO M270, Grade 36, with nuts and bolts conforming to ASTM A307, Grade A. Use malleable iron washers against wood unless otherwise noted.
e. FABRICATION: Submit shop drawings for all bridge components. Show all dimensions and fabrication details for all cut or bored timber. Field drilling of holes shall not be allowed unless otherwise noted on the plans.
f. LAG BOLT INSTALLATION: Pre-bore lag bolt holes using two diameters, one for the shank and one for the threads. The lead hole for the shank is to be 1/16" larger than the shank diameter and is to be bored to the depth of penetration diameter as shown on the PLANS and is to be bored at least to the length of the threads. Do not drive lag bolts with a hammer.
12. Contractors shall wash all equipment to be used on the job prior to mobilizing to the site. The CO, COR, or inspector shall inspect equipment at either the Dillon or Butte or Jefferson Forest Service Offices. Contractors shall call ahead to arrange for inspection at least on day in advance.
Sheet 8
13. The contractor is responsible for cleaning up all stakes and flagging at the end of the project and hauling them off National Forest Land. Stakes shall not be removed until after the final inspection.
14. Contractors have the flexibility to leave the flagline for 5 feet in either direction without approval from the COR. Changes greater than 5 feet require approval. Inspectors cannot approve location changes or any other contract changes.
15. Forest Service personnel not authorized on the project cannot accept, delete or add any work to the project.
16. Removal of structures includes all items specified for removal in the trail logs and said items must be removed from Forest Service land. Bid as lump sum. If removed culverts are still functional deliver to Jocelyn Dodge at the Butte Ranger District
