Polk Road Emergency Bridge Installation: AG-0116-S-12-0009

Questions and Answers

No information given on this document amends the solicitation.

Question 1: Also the removal of the 8 ft 60”CMP that is 100 ft downstream, will that require a creek crossing with an excavator to remove the pipe? If so, do you have a crossing permit issued by F & G ? Can the excavator safely get to the pipe?

Answer 1. The condition of the damaged culvert could not be assessed at the original survey due to high water flow, and has likely shifted since that time. Negotiation with the state for stream crossing is ongoing, but they understand the need to have this done quickly.

Question 2: Can we get across with and excavator or do we have to come in from both sides?

Answer 2. It is our sense here that you will have to come at it from both sides, but suggest someone visit the site.

Question 3: Is this the big heavy 80’ bridge from Shelter?

Answer 3. It's a 70ft Hamilton that is stored at Thorne Bay.

Question 4: Does any of the material for the bridge/contract need to be purchased or is the material for the modular bridge provided by the USFS(e.g. timber, geotextile, bill of materials for footings sh. 5 of 5)?

Answer 4. Only geotextile needs to be purchased.

Question 5: Is the 70 ft. modular bridge that will be transported from the Forest Service Sorting Yard in Thorne

Bay been decked with timber or will the decking and wear surfacing need to be installed?

Answer 5. Decking and surface are installed, except, perhaps at the seam between two halves.

Question 6: Does the bridge need to be painted?

Answer 6. Paint not needed at this time.

Question 7: Are the sills and backwalls already constructed?

Answer 7. Backwalls and sills assembly required.

Question 8: Will the rock material source (I assume is): “Sources for all material are located within 3 miles on the main road from the Klawock side of the site” (page 4 or 33) at a rate per c.y. or will it be provided to the contractor?

Answer 8. Hauling from the closest source is up to the contractor. It is believed that all material is readily accessible in those pits.

Question 9: When is completion date for the Polk Bridge Emergency Installation?

Answer 9. Completion is intended prior to winter shuts off access.

Question 10: In order to remove the remains of the C.M.P. culvert that has lodged approximately 100 yards downstream, will we be able to walk and excavator near or in the stream to remove the culvert from the stream?

Answer 10. This portion of the project was not accessible at the time of survey. It is not a critical portion of the job. It may be possible to winch the culvert out from the road.
