About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the procurement of one Nano-Aerosol Hygroscopicity-Cloud Condensation Analyzer by the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT).
AFIT requires this specialized instrument to advance understanding of aerosol optical effects and hygroscopicity characteristics across varying aerosol compositions and humidity conditions for faculty and student research purposes. The analyzer must supersaturate aerosol particles in a vertical column with continuously wet walls and longitudinal thermal gradient, then size activated particles using an optical particle counter to provide concentration number and size distribution data. Key technical specifications include: scanned super-saturation ratio range of 0.07% to 2.0%; compatibility with customer-provided differential mobility analyzer for particle size selection spanning approximately 0.005 to 10 micrometers; supersaturation change time of approximately 30 seconds for 0.2% change; operating environment of 5°C to +35°C with 0–95% ambient relative humidity (non-condensing); dimensions not exceeding 35.0" H x 20" W x 20" D with maximum weight of 120 lbs.; 110-120VAC power requirement; and Windows-compatible data output via USB-to-Serial RS-232 cable. The instrument must not require volatile or hazardous materials such as butanol or radioactive/soft-x-ray sources. Equipment must be furnished by the original manufacturer with one-year warranty covering defects in material and workmanship under normal operation. The contractor shall deliver the instrument within 120 days after contract award to AFIT/ENP, 2950 Hobson Way, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio 45433-7765, and provide one day (8 hours) of training for up to 4 personnel on installation and operation. Coordination contact is Gregory W Smith (937-902-4372; gregory.smith.18@us.af.mil). Payment will be made through the Wide Area Workflow (WAWF) system following government final inspection and acceptance.

STATEMENT OF WORK
FOR A
NANO-AEROSOL HYGROSCOPICITY- CLOUD CONDENSATION ANALYZER
30 October 2026
GENERAL
The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) requires the Nano-Aerosol Hygroscopicity- Cloud Condensation Analyzer to improve understanding of the interrelationship of aerosol optical effects and their hygroscopicity (i.e. their tendency to absorb moisture from the ambient atmosphere relative humidity). Relationship depends on highly dynamic aerosol composition, source, and size.
Faculty/students require this to fill critical field instrument gaps and enable 24/7 aerosol hygroscopicity characterization over wide-ranging aerosol mix and humidity conditions.
The following specification lists the minimum requirements for 1 (ONE) Nano-Aerosol Hygroscopicity- Cloud Condensation Analyzer instrumentation:
1. Instrument must remain operational whether in a Laboratory environment or in extreme weather conditions.
2. Supersaturates aerosol particles in a vertical column with continuously wet walls and a longitudinal thermal gradient; subsequently activated particles are sized using an optical particle counter
a. Provides concentration number and size distribution of sampled air
b. Enables determination of aerosol humidity and aerosol average humidity through pre-selected sizes and scanned super-saturation ratios.
3. The scanned super-saturation ratio range must be between 0.07% – 2.0%
4. The instrument can interface with a customer-provided differential mobility analyzer to enable automatic particle size selection spanning approx. 0.005 to 10 micrometers
5. Does not require the use of volatile / hazardous material such as aerosol condensation agents like butanol or radioactive / soft-x-ray sources.
6. Time required for supersaturation change: ~30 seconds for 0.2% change.
7. Operating environment: 5C to +35C; ambient relative humidity: 0 – 95%, non condensing
8. Instrument dimension and weight shall not exceed 35.0” H x 20” W x 20” D, 120 lbs., respectively.
9. Power requirement: 110-120VAC.
10. Instrument control and data analysis software executed using onboard computer for control and data logging
11. Instrument’s measurement raw data shall be available via vendor-supplied USB-to-
Serial RS-232 cable & null modem cable and in a format compatible with Microsoft® Windows operating systems and software, to simplify data analysis.
12. Equipment must be furnished by the original manufacturer and warranty for 1 year
13. Must include training from the original manufacturer for 3 people for 8 hours.
DELIVERY
The contractor shall deliver within 120 days after contract award
Delivery Address:
AFIT / ENP 2950 Hobson Way, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio 45433-7765
TRAINING
1. The contractor shall provide one day (8 hours) of training for up to 4 people on the installation and operation.
2. The contractor shall coordinate training schedule with:
a. Government POC: Gregory W Smith Ph# 937-902-4372 email:
