About this file
This Addendum One document is issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky's Department for Facilities and Support Services, Division of Engineering and Contract Administration for a roof replacement project at the Kentucky Veteran Cemetery in Williamstown. The project involves replacing the existing slate roof with new synthetic slate roofing materials, with approved manufacturers including Brava, DaVinci, and EcoStar. The addendum is dated May 12, 2025, and provides clarifications and responses to bidder questions about specific roofing details, including slate dimensions, flashing requirements, and existing roof conditions. Key specifications include maintaining the existing roof's configuration, preserving certain existing elements like gutters and downspouts, and ensuring the new roof meets performance requirements for warranty and color fading.
The addendum addresses multiple technical aspects of the roof replacement, including slate width (minimum 12"), snow guard specifications, and metal flashing details. Bidders are instructed that the existing structural insulated panel (SIP) system does not require new OSB sheathing, and most existing elements such as gable faces, drip edges, and downspouts are to remain in place. The project will require replacing roof flashing (hip, ridge, valley, and penetrations), and bidders must match existing roof characteristics as closely as possible. The roof does not currently have active leaks, and the replacement is part of a maintenance and preservation effort for the veteran's cemetery facility.

KVA – KVCN Roof Replacement
Addendum #1 Issued: May 12, 2025
BIDDER QUESTIONS:
1. Is this 12" system in length or width? What is the exact size of the tile sought as slates do not appear to be 12" wide. Roof is to be replaced "in kind" w/ new slate shingle roof. I believe the specific product sought is Certainteed Symphony Slate which is discontinued and no longer in use. Are we looking at Brava, Enviroslate, DaVinci, EcoStar or similar type of product which is Class 4, but not an exact look match. Please advise the exact product sought as Certainteed Symphony Slate has been discontinued and no longer produced.
A: 12” minimum width. depending on the manufacturer. Per substitution below, synthetics slates will be approved as manufactured by Brava, DaVinci, and EcoStar.
2. Does the roof actively leak? Reference to 2 sheets OSB, however our representative stated that the roof deck looked like a composite system of bonded OSB to ISO. Underside of deck says 5/8" Fiberock which is a tile backer and not typically located on a roof. How is the OSB secured as I see no fasteners under side of deck? Please advise.
A: The Roof Does not actively leak. The roof is secure to a sandwiched Structurally Insulated panel system (SIPS). Bidders shall not account for new sheets of OSB sheathing on their bids.
3. Detail 13 & 15/A200 calls for "new Stainless Steel Metal Roofing System" yet A120 does not reference this detail in the coded notes. It would appear these can be re-used. Please advise.
A: Referenced metal roofing is to remain in place.

4. Plans read that we are to remove and replace the gable and drip aprons. In theory keeping with the description these should be able to remain. Can we maintain the existing or should it be replaced? Please advise.
A:Gable and Drip Aprons to remain in place unless damaged/compromised.
5. Are the snow guards to be an exact match of the existing? If so can you please provide brand name and type. Please advise.
A: Snow guard description is provided in Specification 073126 – 2.5
KVA – KVCN Roof Replacement DECA Account Number: 074-CBV3-NE02-00
6. Hip, Ridge & Valley Metal: Existing Hip & Ridge is rolled, existing valley is W. I can find no detail associated with its attachment mechanism. Please advise. Is the new Hip & Ridge to be rolled as well? Please advise.
A: Hip, Ridge, and Valley flashing shall match existing in configuration, shape, and attachment. Refer to Clarifications below and the latest version of Slate Roof Design and Installation Manual for details not shown.
7. The bid form requires a square foot price for plywood decking replacement. The plans indicate the roof deck is a structural insulated panel. Please clarify the type of decking that should be included in the unit price.
A: Unit Price requirement is not applicable and shall be removed.
8. Coded Note 4 on Sheet A120 and Detail 14/A200 call for the new zinc-tin coated stainless steel downspouts. To our knowledge this material is no longer available. Zinc-Tin Coated Copper is available, and Tin Coated Stainless Steel is available from an overseas manufacturer. Please provide an alternative.
A: No new downspouts are to be provided with this project. Note #4 is not used.
9. Coded Note 4 on Sheet A120 refers to a 4 x 5 cast iron boot. Are we to include new cast iron boots in our bid?
A: No new downspouts are to be provided with this project. Note #4 is not used.
10. General Note 5 on Sheet A120 requires new concrete splash blocks. Please clarify if the splash blocks are to be used or if the downspouts are to be connected to existing (or new) cast iron boots.
A: Existing downspouts and site drainage shall remain the same. No new splash blocks required.
11. Please clarify the type and gauge of prefinished/ painted metal to be used for the flashings and hip and ridge cap flashings.
A:Refer to question #6 above. Flashing shall meet minimum thicknesses provided in 2015 IBC Chapter 15 for code compliance.
12. Detail 13/A200 calls for new stainless steel metal roofing system. Please specify the finish and gauge of stainless steel to be used.
A: Referenced metal roofing is to remain in place.

13. Coded Note 13 on Sheet A120 calls for new snow guards around the entire perimeter. Is there a minimum number of rows and spacing to be installed (pattern)? Please also specify the type of material the snow guards are.
A: Snow guard information is in the Slate Shingle Specification - 073126.
14. Will you accept an 18 x 9 slate? (If an 18” slate is laid with a 3” Head lap the exposure is 7.5”.) The existing slate appears to be Virginia Buckingham slate which is not currently available.
A: Width shall match existing slate shingles
15. Will you accept alternative slate types? For example, Spanish Black (Cupa), Grayson Unfading
Black (very similar to Buckingham)?
A: Style to be similar to existing.
16. In reading thru the description it states "flashing, gutters and spouts" are expected to remain in place. Please confirm.
A: Flashing on the roof (hip, ridge, valley, and pentrations through slate) are to be replaced. Gutters, drip edges, gable faces, and downspouts are expected to remain.
