About this file

This document is a Binding Letter of Interpretation for the Museum of Science & Industry's Development of Regional Impact (DRI) Status, issued by the State of Florida Department of Community Affairs on March 7, 1990. The document details the Museum of Science and Industry's planned expansion in Hillsborough County, which involves developing 47 acres to expand the existing museum facility from 67,000 to 225,000 gross square feet. The proposed project includes constructing a 340-seat OMNIMAX theater, 700 parking spaces, and various exhibit and educational spaces, with development scheduled in three phases over a fifteen-year period from 1990-2004. The expansion will include exhibit areas, visitor services, education spaces, an auditorium, and an outside amphitheater.

The project is located in Section 16, Township 28 South, Range 19 East, approximately eight miles from Pasco County, and is currently designated under industrial land use classifications. The museum currently offers educational programs for students from pre-school to college level and attracted over 33,000 students in 1987-88. The proposed development is considered compatible with existing land use and zoning designations and will not require a land use amendment. The State of Florida determined that the project does not meet the thresholds requiring a full Development of Regional Impact (DRI) review, specifically noting that the project's parking and seating capacities are below the triggering thresholds for additional regulatory scrutiny.
