About this file
This document is Addendum #1 for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) BDC44-23/24 project to repair the Sharks Channel Bridge on the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail. The addendum provides responses to various questions from bidders regarding the scope of work, construction requirements, and environmental regulations. Key details include:
The deck cantilevers are to be removed entirely, with supporting I-beams cut flush to the concrete arches. No new deck overhangs will be constructed, and the focus is on installing a new railing cap. There are limitations on equipment weight (10,000 lbs over a single arch) and restrictions on barge spudding activities due to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary regulations. Contractors will be responsible for obtaining a building permit and associated fees. The liquidated damages and traffic control requirements are outlined in the bid documents.

3. Question: Do the three deck sections that have collapsed totaling approximately
134ft and fifteen cubic yards of concrete need to be replaced.
Answer: The entire deck cantilever is to be removed flush with the face of the concrete arches, from abutment to abutment. (Refer to attached photograph showing similar construction from a different project.)
4. Question: What rebar should be used for the decking?
Answer: The deck cantilevers are not to be reconstructed. The new cap is doweled into the arches and the reinforcement for that detail is shown on plan sheet B1-15.
5. Question: Do all the supporting I beams need to be replaced under all decking or just particular ones?
Answer: The supporting I-beams are to be cutoff flush with the face of the concrete arch during removal of the cantilevers as per Note 2 on plan sheet B1-14.
The treatment of the ends of the beams shall be similar to the attached photograph.
6. Question: What are the proposed reinforcing steel requirements to rebuild the overhang deck since the current steel is deteriorated?
Answer: The deck overhangs are not to be replaced. A new cap to support the new railings is to be installed as per the contract documents.

Answer: No separate payment will be provided for retrieval of concrete and bridge debris from the water. The current failed cantilever sections and any debris dropped in the water during construction is to be removed and disposed of properly.
8. Question: What is the maximum weight of equipment (cranes etc.) that is permissible on the bridge to retrieve rubble on the bridge and in the water?
Answer: The weight limit on the bridge structure during construction is 10,000 LBS over a single arch, as indicated on the 4th note under Demolition on plan sheet B1-3. The contractor has the option of performing a structural analysis by a licensed Florida PE in order to increase that restriction.
9. Question: 1. Please clarify the scope of work for the Base Bid, Alternate #1 and Alternate #2.
Answer: Please see Bid Documents.
10. Question: How is the project being funded?
