About this file

This document is an Addendum #1 to the bidding documents for the Rifle River Recreation Area Pedestrian Bridge Replacement project, issued by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) State Facilities Administration Design and Construction Division. The addendum revises the bid opening date to October 23, 2024, adds pay items for a boardwalk and tree clearing to the base bid, and adds parking area improvements as an alternate. It also provides clarifications and responses to bidder questions regarding materials, specifications, and substitution requests. The project involves the removal of an existing timber suspension bridge and the construction of a new engineered steel bridge and elevated boardwalk on helical piles, with a contract time of 360 calendar days.

The base bid includes items such as mobilizations, demolition, excavations, helical foundations, boardwalk, concrete, steel, prefabricated bridge, and general conditions. Bidders are required to provide unit prices and item bid prices for the base bid and alternates. The addendum also references an approved EGLE Joint Permit for the project. Bidders must acknowledge receipt of the addendum on their bid forms.

CLARIFICATIONS

A1.5 Prebid meeting agenda is attached.

A1.6 Prebid meeting attendance record is attached.

A1.7 Required special inspections noted on Sheet S-001 are to be provided by the Owner.

A1.8 Q: Bid schedule is missing the pay item for the boardwalk. Can this be added or is it included elsewhere?

A: Bid schedule has been updated to include pay item for the boardwalk.

A1.9 Q: Lumber specs the blocking is called out as Douglas Fir Larch but everything else is Southern Yellow Pine.

Can the Douglas fir be changed to SYP to match the other lumber?

A: Yes, it is acceptable to use SYP for the blocking.

A1.10 Q: Lumber specs call for the lumber to be dried a second time after treatment. This is something that our lumber suppliers do not recommend as it leads to checking, cracking and splitting of the lumber. Can this be dropped?

A: Eliminating the re-drying process after treatment is acceptable.

A1.11 Q: TrueNorth Steel is interested in providing a quote to the bidding prime contractors, for the 6x100 prefabricated steel pedestrian truss bridge structure. We respectfully request approval to be considered a qualified and pre-approved bridge manufacturer for this project.

A.: Under review. Answer to be provided in Addendum 2.

A1.12 Q: The decking states that it shall be Trex composite or similar, there are a variety of options that range wildly in price. Is there a specific kind in mind?

A: The composite decking will need to be coordinated between the bridge and boardwalk. Basis of design is for a 2" square edge, Trex Select Composite Decking or equivalent. The color selection will be by the owner.

A1.13 Q: There is no thickness or width called for the decking, this is something that is variable as well. Can some clarifications be added to indicate type and size (Thickness, Width)?

A: Basis of design is for a 2" square edge, Trex Select Composite Decking (2x6 boards) or equivalent.

A1.14 Q: Borings are on the specs and they indicate they are on the plans but after reviewing the sheets; cannot find where the borings were taken. Can callouts be added indicating where these were taken from?

A: Updated plan with soil boring location to be included in Addendum 2.

A1.15 Q: In the prefabricated steel truss bridge specifications under truss style, it states that adequate drainage holes shall be added to aid in the hot dip galvanizing process. Is the truss bridge galvanized?

A: The drainage holes would only apply for the hot-dip process, but this is a Corten bridge.

A1.16 Q: What is the thickness of the composite decking?

A: Basis of design is for a 2" square edge, Trex Select Composite Decking (2x6 boards) or equivalent.

A1.17 Q: AWPA C2 treatment is an old specification. Please advise the treatment use category.

Addendum 1 751/22334.CTS Rifle River Pedestrian Bridge Replacement

A: The treatment should be applicable for AWPA U1, Category UC4B.

A1.18 Q: What height bollard is required?

A: 36" height

A1.19 Q: Pioneer Bridges Substitution Request.

A: Under review. Answer to be provided in Addendum 2.

A1.20 Q: Checked several sources on the Corten Channel. The best and closest located is a 8 X 18.7 Channel. MC 8 x

21.4 isn't available since COVID. Is there an alternative to the required MC 8x21.4 Channel.

A1.21 Q: Is copper naphthalene treatment of the wood acceptable?

A1.22 Q: Is fiber reinforced plastic or fiberglass grating acceptable in place of composite decking?

A1.23 Q: For the finish on the weathered steel: we would like it to be sandblasted to a SP7 surface with highly visible flecks. Is that acceptable?
