About this file
This document is a draft Commercial Item Description (CID) for a maternity undershirt designed for pregnant female military personnel. The specification covers an undershirt with a crew neck style, 1-inch wide neck trim made of double-thickness rib material, and side seams gathered with elastic sewing tape ruching starting 4 inches from the bottom hem. The undershirt is available in eight color classes (OD Green, Tan, Blue, White, Black, Gray, Coyote, and a custom shade) and six sizes ranging from X-Small to XX-Large.
The material is a synthetic and cotton blend (not exceeding 50 percent synthetic) with specific requirements for weight, bursting strength, dimensional stability, colorfastness, and moisture vapor transmission. The document includes detailed measurement specifications, labeling requirements, and quality assurance provisions. The draft is part of a review process initiated by Marine Corps Systems Command, inviting industry feedback until July 30, 2025. Comments should be submitted via email using the Consolidated Comments Form, with the intention of promoting competition and manufacturability while maintaining the current design's tested specifications.

A filter paper wet out with a 5.0 percent lead acetate solution shall be placed over the top of the test tube. The lead acetate solution shall contain 5.0 grams of chemically pure (CP) reagent grade lead acetate and enough distilled water to make up a 100-milliliter solution; if the solution is not clear, a few drops (one at a time) of glacial acetic acid shall be added until the solution is clear. The test tube containing the textile sample, stannous chloride, and wet filter paper shall be heated over a low flame until the solution is boiling. The solution should not be heated for more than 15 seconds. A brown to black stain on the filter paper should be evaluated as follows:
a. Free – the filter paper shows no discoloration or staining of any kind.
b. Slight – the filter paper shows a light tan to light brown discoloration stain.
c. Moderate – the filter paper shows a dark brown discoloration stain.
d. Severe – the filter paper shows a black discoloration stain.
The rating shall be recorded. The results shall be recorded as “pass” or “fail”.

The label shall include size, manufacturer’s style number, fiber content, lot number, and manufacturing date, as well as laundering (care) information. When class 8 is specified, the shade number shall also be included on the label. If service-specific markings are requested, these should be specified in the contract or purchase order (see 7.3). When tested in accordance with AATCC TM135 (1)(IV)(Ai), the label shall have a colorfastness rating of “good” to laundering.
3.4.2 Bar code label. The undershirt shall be coded with a tag meeting the specifications of MIL-DTL-32075, type VIII, class 17; alternatively, a label meeting the requirements of type VII, class 17 may be adhered to the outside of the individual poly bag.

7. NOTES.
7.1 Intended use. The undershirt is intended for wear by pregnant female military personnel of the Department of
Defense.
7.2 Source of documents.
7.2.1 American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC). AATCC test methods are available from www.aatcc.org.
7.2.2 ASTM International. ASTM standards are available from www.astm.org.

7.2.3 Defense specifications. Defense specifications are available online at https://quicksearch.dla.mil.
7.3 Ordering data. The contract or order should specify the following:
a. CID document number and revision.
b. Quantity required.
c. Class(es) and size(s) required; and shade information, as necessary (see 2, 2.1, 3.2.4, 3.2.6, and 3.2.8).
d. Service-specific markings, if requested (see 3.4.1).
e. Product conformance provisions (see 5.1).
7.4 Visual shade matching. In 2017, option A of AATCC EP9, Visual Assessment of Color Difference of Textiles, was changed to option C. NOTE: In case of confusion, the viewing geometry should be “The specimen plane and illumination source will be parallel to each other and aligned so that the light flux is incident at the center of the specimen plane, which is set at a 35±5-degree angle relative to the horizontal. The observer will view the specimens at a 90-degree angle, relative to the plane of the specimens.”
7.4.1 Use of D75 illuminant. In 2022, the U.S. Military (all services) accepted D65 as the new preferred light source for visual shade matching due to supply chain issues with D75. DD1222s should reflect which light source is used. If the light source is not indicated on the DD1222, D65 will be assumed by the Government Shade
Laboratory.
