About this file

This Statement of Work outlines requirements for a Run Coordinator position for the sPHENIX experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), scheduled to begin physics data-taking in spring 2025. The Run Coordinator will be a scientist from an sPHENIX collaborating institution who will be released from teaching responsibilities at their home institution to work on-site at BNL.

The Run Coordinator's key responsibilities include supervising all technical activities for sPHENIX data-taking, overseeing shift crews, managing Data Acquisition, monitoring detector performance, scheduling maintenance, and coordinating with BNL's Collider Accelerator Department. Specific deliverables include preparing sPHENIX for data-taking, coordinating pre-operation tasks, managing physics data recording and archiving, setting up shifts, coordinating documentation and crew training, and representing sPHENIX in meetings with CAD and NPP ALD. The Department of Energy Office of Science has issued this as a pre-solicitation RFI, seeking only capabilities statements from existing sPHENIX program collaborating members.

Text version

1. Scope of Work The sPHENIX experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) will begin its next run for physics data-taking in the spring of 2025. sPHENIX is a nuclear physics experiment whose purpose is to measure particles produced in collisions of nuclei at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in order to determine the microscopic properties of the Quark Gluon Plasma. The sPHENIX data-taking effort in 2025 will be organized and led by a Run Coordinator, who will be a scientist from an sPHENIX collaborating institution. The work of Run Coordinator will be performed at BNL.

This SOW describes the work to be performed at BNL by an sPHENIX collaborating scientist in their role as Run Coordinator. During the period covered by this SOW, the scientist performing this work will be released from their teaching responsibility at their home institution. The work to be performed as sPHENIX Run Coordinator will involve the supervision and coordination of all technical activities associated with sPHENIX data-taking during a RHIC running period, including oversight of shift crews, management of the Data Acquisition group, monitoring of sPHENIX detector performance, scheduling of detector maintenance tasks, and coordination of Beam Operations with members of the BNL Collider Accelerator Department. Both technical and supervisory work of sPHENIX Run Coordinator requires extensive experience in operating nuclear physics experiments.

2. Deliverables Prepare sPHENIX for data-taking in RHIC Run 2025 by coordinating the pre-operation tasks of each sPHENIX detector subsystem, including tasks both with and without RHIC collisions.

Coordinate sPHENIX data-taking activities for RHIC 2025.

In collaboration with the sPHENIX Run Operations team, manage the recording and archiving of physics data produced during the RHIC operating period.

Additional responsibilities include:

• Set up of data taking shifts.

• Coordinate the necessary documentation production for successful sPHENIX operations.

• Coordinate the training of shift crews.

• Oversee the sPHENIX day-to-day data-taking, performance and maintenance efforts.

• Set priorities for sPHENIX operation and data-taking efforts

• Together with the sPHENIX Operations Director, represent the sPHENIX collaboration in meetings and discussion with CAD and the NPP ALD concerning the optimization of the RHIC 2025 run.
