About this file
This document contains instructions for federal jury summons and service in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Potential jurors will be on-call for two weeks from the reported date and must be available for eight days of service. Jurors should call after 7:00 PM the night before their service date to confirm their attendance is required, as not all summoned jurors will need to report each day. Validated parking is available at the court locations. The document also provides frequently asked questions about postponement policies, address changes, notification of excuse requests, length of service, attire guidelines, and prohibited items in the courthouse. A related federal contract opportunity involves mailing services for the United States District Court.

Frequently Asked Questions
C How long can I postpone my jury service for?
If you have only postponed your jury service once, you may postpone one more time, to a date within one year from your initial report date, by logging into the questionnaire online at www.cacd.uscourts.gov/jury. If you have already postponed your jury service two times, you may not request an additional postponement.
C I have moved out of the area. What do I do?
Update your address by logging into the questionnaire online at www.cacd.uscourts.gov/jury. If the court establishes you are no longer in our jurisdiction, you will be excused.
C How will I be notified of the status of my excuse/postponement request?
If you provided an email address at the time you submitted your online questionnaire, the court will notify you via email if your request to be excused or postponed is granted. You may also check your status 5 days before your report date by calling (800) 327-3296 or by accessing the Court’s website.
C How long am I on-call for?
You are “on call” for 2 weeks, and must call once a week (usually on Monday) to verify your reporting instructions. Call after 7:00 p.m. the night before you are scheduled to report to confirm that your attendance is required. Not all jurors will need to report.
C When I report, how long must I be available for?
Most trials last an average of 4-5 days. However, on your initial day of reporting the court requires you to be available for 8 business days. The judge will explain to you the days and times you must report for service. If by the end of the first reporting day you are NOT selected to be a juror, your service will be completed. If you ARE selected as a juror, your service will be completed upon the trial’s conclusion. On your first day, plan on staying until 5:00 p.m.
C Can I be transferred to a closer court near my home?
You are being summoned by a federal court. You cannot be transferred to a state superior court.
C Is there a dress code?
Yes. A trial is a formal legal process, and jurors should take the seriousness of the proceeding into consideration with respect to attire and personal conduct. Business attire is strongly suggested. Ties are not required. Jurors should not wear shorts, mini-skirts, tank tops, flip-flops, or hats (except for religious purposes). Jurors who are not appropriately dressed will be sent home and ordered to appear for jury service on a future date. Courtrooms can be cold, so a sweater or jacket is recommended.
The following items are prohibited in the courthouse: Weapons/sharp objects (such as firearms, brass knuckles, knives and scissors), including non-lethal devices (such as tasers, batons, and pepper spray).
Leave these items in your car or at home.
