PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Kawuneeche Visitor Center (KVC) is located just north of Grand Lake, Colorado and is the only visitor center located on Rocky Mountain National Park’s (ROMO) western side, and it also serves as the administrative headquarters for the western side of the park. The facility has been designated as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and treatment will meet Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and integrated into the design. The KVC is currently slated for a complete replacement of interior interpretive exhibits (to be provided and installed by a separate contractor) and as such, interior alterations are necessary. In addition to preparing the visitor center portion for new interpretive exhibits, rehabilitation of the greater facility and site is also necessary in order to replace and update old systems and to correct building code and accessibility issues.

This project will provide accessibility improvements throughout, including but not limited to exterior entrances and routes, the maintained landscape, the buildings, restrooms, and parking. Updates will be made to the interior finishes including new doors and hardware, paint and stain, signage, and flooring.

Windows and window treatment will be replaced to improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort.

Select rooms in the administrative wing will be relocated and/or reconfigured with interior wall modifications to create improved space utilization. The server room will be relocated as part of this and the equipment, feeds, connections will be replaced. The fiber lines serving the Grand Lake Entrance and the CRD Maintenance Building shall be replaced and routed to the new server room. The mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems will be largely replaced throughout to address performance, energy efficiency, and code requirements. A fire suppression system will be added throughout the building. The original plank ceiling will be removed and reinstalled in kind to allow for the installation of the fire protection system in the visitor center exhibit area in compliance with DOI Historic Preservation requirements. The project will also provide IT, AV, and security upgrades. Improvement of site drainage will be included, and exterior lighting will be made night sky compliant. An outdoor gathering space with seating will be provided for interpretive talks and the existing outdoor picnic area will be rehabilitated to meet accessibility requirements. The non-historic gable roof over the comfort station shall be removed and the facility shall be returned to a flat roof configuration, in style of the original construction, which addresses current structural and drainage issues. Temporary facilities for staff and visitors will be provided during rehabilitation, as well as moving and storage of building contents.
