Alignment of Pump / Gearbox / Clutch
Proper alignment for pump and gearbox is important. This will reduce vibrations, excessive wear and load on all the components connected to the couplings. This document shows the procedure for coupling alignment for a Fi-Fi system.
Angular Alignment Attach a clock gauge to one of the coupling halves, letting the point of the gauge rest on the other half surface side (Fig. 1). Turning the shaft and gauge together and reading the gauge will detect necessary adjustments to obtain the alignment tolerance requirement.
Radial Alignment Attach a clock gauge to one of the coupling halves, letting the point of the gauge rest on the other coupling half radially (Fig. 2). Turning the shaft and gauge together and reading the gauge will detect necessary adjustments to obtain the alignment tolerance requirement.
Axial Alignment For couplings on resiliently mounted engines in particular, this will apply. Here, the coupling documentation must be adhered to in each particular case. The coupling must be measured and axially located in accordance to relevant specifications.
Alignment tolerances In most cases the required alignment tolerances are given in the documentation from the coupling manufacturer. If these tolerances are not known, the following values can be used as guidelines:
Flexible couplings Angular (Fig. 1) is maximum: 0,1° (0,1° =
0,17mm at a distance of 100mm from shaft centre line).
Radial (Fig. 2) is maximum 0,2mm.
Tooth couplings Angular (Fig. 1) is maximum: 0,1mm at surface on the hub end.
Radial (Fig. 2) is maximum: 0,1mm.
Fig. 1 Angular alignment with clock gauge
Fig. 2 Radial alignment with clock gauge

Rev.01 / 15.07.2008
General If the pump has been supplied mounted together with the driver on a common base frame, preliminary alignment has been done prior to dispatch from our works. Ensure that the base frame is evenly supported on the foundation bed. In this way alignment is not affected when tightening the base frame bolts to the foundation.
ATTENTION!
Final alignment must be carried out after the following activities are completed:
• Fixing bolts have been correctly tightened with torque according to bolt size and type.
• Piping has been connected and pressure tested. Pipe supports are carrying the loads.
• Pump has been operating until a stable bearing temperature has been reached.
• The pump support does not carry any load.
Alignment result Please fill in the measured alignment results in the table below and return to Fire Fighting Systems AS. Please also report axial alignment result if applicable.

Make sure control system power is switched off before manual operation of monitor or valves to avoid injuries. Detail instructions for operation are refered to FFS supplied main manual.
1. Manually open Suction Valve and close Discharge Valve. Ensure By-pass valve open.
Pull the lever and crank the hand wheel. CW -open or CCW -close the valves.
2. Start the pump by engage the clutch with “Manual Clutch Button”, push-turn button to engage. Ensure safety pin on button is removed.
3. Ensure water flows out of the monitor before open Discharge Valve. This is very important to avoid water hammer.
4. Manual operation of monitor by cranking handwheels. Left side hand wheel for elevation.
Right side hand wheel for rotation.

1 Safety Annotations All safety directions must be respected in order to avoid damage to personnel, environment and equipment. In this user manual the following annotations are used with belonging signification:
DANGER / Warning
Indicates possibilities for hazards or unsafe practices, which could result in fatal or severe personnel injuries or substantial product or property damage, if the required precautions are not taken.
CAUTION!
Indicates possibilities for hazards or unsafe practices, which COULD result in minor personnel injuries and/or property damage, if the required precautions are not taken.
Note
Draws attention to specific information of technical significance which might not be obvious to specialist personnel, or points at important remarks in the procedures to follow.

2 Operation
DANGER
• Water jets from monitors must never be pointed directly towards people, deck equipment or other structures not intended for fire extinguishing.
The jets have a very powerful impact force and can cause severe damage even to buildings and other structures.
• The area around the remotely operated monitors must be evacuated when in use.
There is a risk of personal injury by squeezing when the monitors are moving.
• The pipeline from each pump must always be properly filled with water before the main discharge valve is opened. If not, there is a chance of water hammer causing damage to the equipment. The bypass valve (valve around discharge valve) is to be used for filling the system.
• Pumps must never be started without liquid filling. Dry running may damage the shaft seals and/or pump internal part very quickly, depending on pump speed and duration.
• Do not overload the pump by running it past the designed duty point. This typically means opening for more and/or larger consumers than the system is designed for.
This is evident by a pressure reading lower than expected of the duty point.
• The fire pump must never be operated if all water consumer valves are closed on the discharge side of the pump, as this may cause the water to overheat in the pump casing.
• Local pump operation will override all interlocks. Ensure valves are in the correct position before starting the pump to prevent water hammer or damage to the pump.
In general, for emergency use only, by trained operator, fully familiarised with the system.
Before the pump is started locally, suction and bypass valve must be ensured opened and discharge valve must be ensured closed. It is important to run the water via the bypass valve, and observe water flowing out of the monitor(s) before opening the discharge valve. Alternatively, to an open bypass valve, open either the overboard line valve or the waterspray system valve.
Ensure the pump has consumption at all times when running.
• Running the pump at speeds above idle through the bypass line, overboard line or any other small consumers for durations exceeding 30 minutes is not recommended.
This will affect the service life of the pump bearing, and pump and piping in general due to vibrations and water velocities from operating the pump considerably outside the designed duty point and pipe diameters.
CAUTION!

To avoid water hammer in the system there is an interlock as follows:
o After clutch has engaged there is a 2 minute (default value) interlock for opening the discharge valve.
8 Maintenance To ensure full functionality it is recommended to operate the Fi-Fi system on a regular basis.
• We recommend running the Fi-Fi system a minimum of once a month.
• We recommend OFF - ON operation of the motor circuit breakers and circuit breakers for incoming voltages 24VDC, 110VAC/220VAC and 440VAC in the control cabinet a minimum of once a year.
