About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details the repair of a salt shed at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center in Pennsylvania. The project involves demolishing the existing damaged metal structure while preserving the concrete foundation, and constructing a new timber-based storage structure for salt and maintenance materials. The new salt shed will have specific requirements including a 5-foot plywood shielding above the concrete walls, a gambrel-style roof with 30-year laminated asphalt shingles, an open front design to accommodate tri-axle dump truck deliveries, and dimensions of approximately 25 feet high and 15 feet wide. The structure must be designed to withstand local wind and snow loads, with stainless steel hardware used within 5 feet of the concrete wall top. The contractor must submit detailed shop drawings, safety plans, and project schedules, and complete all work within 120 days of contract notice to proceed, following VA specifications and all relevant federal, state, and local codes.

Structure: The new salt storage structure shall be fabricated using pressure treated timber. The structure must be able to accommodate local wind and snow loads and ensure that rain and water does not come in contact with the stored salt. The following post base detail is an example basis of design for a timber post into a concrete foundation; contractor shall provide their own submittals for anchor construction and material.

Figure 3-0 basis of design

A 5-foot-tall plywood shielding must be constructed above the existing concrete walls (interior wall face) to ensure salt does not deposit on top or between the wall components. Shielding along the base of the timber portion, is intended to provide a physical barrier between the salt deposit and the structural components/hardware of the shelter. The shielding extension of the interior wall shall ensure that salt cannot deposit on or near structural anchoring components of the timber structure. Louvers, vents or other wind load mitigation shall be used to relieve wind pressure on the sides or back of the structure. Within 5 feet of the top of the concrete wall, stainless steel hardware shall be used. All hardware which may be in contact or proximity of the salt deposit (starting at the top of concrete walls and the 5 feet above) shall be stainless steel.

The roof shall be gambrel type (symmetrical with two slopes on each side), with the front of the building left open with no doors or sides of any kind. The front face of the building used for deliveries shall be left completely open and unobstructed by supports. The composition, configuration and slope of the structure shall ensure compliance with local snow load and wind load rating. Roof materials must include 30-year laminated asphalt shingles with decking material in accordance with spec section: 07 31 13 ASPHALT SHINGLES.

The rafter design shall ensure that delivery trucks can lift bed along the entire length of the structure (approximately 25 feet high with a minimum of 15-foot width)

Any lighting fixtures, conduit, or other utility systems which are damaged during demolition of the building, or unable to be reinstalled, shall be replaced. Lighting shall direct light from the entrance toward the rear of the shelter, providing high visibility inside the unit. Lighting shall not be directed toward the front of the building as it causes safety risks for incoming driver vision.

All work shall be performed in accordance with specifications. In the event of a discrepancy, the VA Specifications shall take precedence; all federal, state, and local code/regulations/standards shall be followed.
