About this file
This document is a specification for an eDNA auto sampling platform issued by Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (NRA). The National Park Service seeks to purchase one automated environmental DNA sampling platform to support resource management and environmental monitoring at Bighorn Canyon Reservoir. The platform must collect, filter, and preserve eight or more water samples using preloaded 47-mm diameter PES or MCE filters with 5 µm pore size, maintain ≥95% water volume accuracy, include GPS functionality, operate on battery for up to 30 days, weigh 100 lbs or less, and feature a user-friendly interface. Additional requirements include the ability to collect consecutive samples on a user-defined schedule and provide evidence of third-party validation.
The delivery location is NPS, Bighorn Canyon NRA, located at 5 Ave B, Fort Smith, Montana 59035, with a delivery timeline of 30 days after receipt of order (ARO). The specification emphasizes that this is not a brand name requirement, indicating openness to multiple potential vendors who can meet the technical specifications. The primary objective is to enable more effective environmental monitoring of biological threats and hazards, with the goal of preventing mission-critical restrictions related to imperiled species and managing potential invasive species spread.

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area eDNA auto sampling platform
Specifications
Objective:
Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area requests the purchase of one (1) eDNA auto sampling platform to support the Bighorn Canyon Resource Management ASD Sustainment needs, to include validating and applying technology to support the mission of the National Park Service.
Specifically, this purchase will enable more effective environmental monitoring of biological threats and hazards at the Bighorn Canyon Reservoir. Failures of environmental monitoring can lead to undesired consequences, including mission critical restrictions due to protections associated with imperiled species and exorbitant, management costs for eliminating or preventing the spread of invasive species.
This platform must meet or exceed the following specifications:
• Collect, filter, and preserve eight (8) or more eDNA water samples
• Use filters that are preloaded and do not require any handling in the field; can remain
‘closed’ until safely back in the lab
• Preservation method of desiccation to allow for easy shipping and alignment with our lab’s DNA extraction workflow
• Use 47-mm diameter PES or MCE filters that include 5 µm pore size options
• Water volume accuracy of ≥ 95%,
• Include a GPS
• Can be programmed to collect consecutive samples and/or collect samples on a user-defined scheduled
• Run off of battery for up to 30 days or shore power,
• Weigh 100 lb or less
• User-friendly interface for operation and data retrieval
• Evidence of 3rd-party (independent) validation and testing
This is NOT a brand name requirement.
