NPS, Joshua Tree National Park West Entrance Joshua Tree Relocation Project Scope of Work (SOW) Relocate twelve Joshua Trees, ranging in height from 3 to 15 feet, from the new west entrance construction site to an area immediately outside the footprint of the construction and staging areas.
SPECIFICATIONS
Location: Proposed new West Entrance construction site. Joshua Tree National Park Item Task__________________________________________________________________________
1. With an archeological monitor present, park employees will create a tree ring around each Joshua Tree to be moved and size it appropriately to ensure saturation of the root system when watered. The vegetation crew will pull a water tender out to the project site and water each tree during the week prior to transplanting.
2. Contractor selected for this project shall conduct an inspection and cleaning of their equipment prior to entrance into the park to ensure vehicles are weed free.
| 3. | With an archeological monitor present, the contractor will use a backhoe to dig each hole for transplanting in locations determined appropriate by park staff. One tree will be moved at a time to avoid having open holes in the landscape, and any open holes at the end of the workday must be either collapsed or caged/ covered to prevent animal entrapment or injury to staff or visitors. Locations within the transplant area will be based on suitability of site, adequate tree spacing, and ease of access for tree moving equipment. The destination holes will be watered prior to transplanting. Flagging will be used to identify the tree’s southern aspect as verified by a compass point. |
| 4. | Contracted crews will use a 94” tree spade attached to a flatbed truck, or a 50” tree spade attached to a front end loader as appropriate for each tree’s size. Trees will be relocated one at a time and will be moved to the closest accessible location outside the construction area footprint and into their designated hole. When transplanted into the destination holes each tree will be oriented in the same direction as it was growing (i.e., south flagging will face south), and will be set at the same level relative to the soil as it was in its original location. |
| 5. | After transplanting the contractor will backfill each tree hole. Park employees will water the trees in during this time. No fertilizer or soil amendments will be used in the transplant holes. |
6. Guying will be accomplished by park staff with three arbor tie lines per tree staked out at equal 120-degree angles, with one line in the direction of the prevailing wind. Lines should be wrapped about ½ to 2/3 of the way up the trunk from the ground or around primary scaffold limbs. Stabilization will be accomplished by attaching the arbor tie to T posts driven into the ground at an angle leaning away from the tree. Guy lines and posts will be marked with bright flagging and fluorescent spray paint.
7. Tire tracks will be raked out of the destination areas, and the holes remaining from where the 12 trees were removed will be collapsed and filled so that they do not present a danger to workers, visitors, or wildlife.
8. Approximate period of performance is 07/13/2022 through 08/31/2022. The Park prefers that this project be completed as soon as possible since groundbreaking and construction of the new west entrance station is scheduled to begin in September 2022.
