b. Finish: Finish coat to match substrate recommendation

G. Galvanized-Metal Substrates:

1. Inspection:

a. Inspect and test for passivation coatings before proceeding to the coating/application phase. Passivation coatings must be removed before application of the coating system. Test with copper sulfate test.

1) Passivation is applied to galvanized steel for the delivery process and protects the zinc on the steel. This type of coating is used to protect galvanized steel when stocked or stored in humid conditions prior to reaching the end customer. The passivating treatment is beneficial for the transportation and storage of galvanized steel;

however, it has also been known to cause coating failures. The treatment is typically colorless and is not readily detectable. It must be removed prior to coating.

2. Copper Sulfate Test Procedure:

a. Prepare a solution by dissolving 20 grams of copper sulfate in one lite

(1000 gams) of distilled water.

b. Solvent wipe a small area pe SSPC-SP1.

c. Sand a small area in the same spot that was just cleaned. Do not sand the entire surface.

d. Using a cotton swab saturated with the copper sulfate solution, apply aswipe to both the sanded and unsanded washed areas.

e. If the sanded and unsanded surfaces turn black at the same and in less than

10 seconds, there is NO passivator on the substrate. A normal cleaning and degreasing is recommended prior to painting.

f. If the unsanded area tuns slower than the sanded area, or not at all, a passivator or stabilizer of some type is present. If neither surface area turns, the surface is probably an alloy of zinc

3. Preparation of Treated or Passivated Surfaces:

a. Remove the treatment by brush blasting per SSPC-SP7.

b. If the above method is prohibited by applicable environmental regulations, mechanical restrictions or cost/economics, chemical etching with phosphoric acid is an option. Chemical etching can leave a powdery residue or may not be able to etch through certain stabilizers, therefore, a test patch is recommended to ensure that the treatment has been removed and proper adhesion can be achieved.

4. Surface Preparation:

a. Remove contaminants by following SSPC SP1 solvent cleaning. Then choose the best method for providing a profile. Service life of coating is in direct proportion to surface preparation. Follow any additional surface preparation guidelines on technical data sheets.

OF FOUR BUILDINGS Page 19

b. SSPC-SP1 Solvent Cleaning- Removal of visible oil, grease, soil, drawing and cutting compounds, and other soluble contaminants from steel surfaces with solvent, vapor, cleaning compound, alkali, emulsifying agent, or steam.

c. SSPC-SP2 Hand Tool Cleaning- Removes all loose mill scale, loose rust, loose paint and other loose detrimental foreign matte by hand chipping, scraping, sanding and wire brushing.

d. SSPC-SP3 Power Tool Cleaning- Removes all loose mill scale, loose rust, loose paint, and other loose detrimental foreign matter by power wire brushing, power sanding, power grinding, power tool chipping and power tool descaling.

e. SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning: When viewed without magnification, the surface shall be fee of all visible oil, grease, dust, dirt, mill scale, rust, coating, oxides, corrosion products and other foreign matter of at least 66-2/3% of unit area, which shall be a square 3 in. x 3 in.

(9 sq. in.). Light shadows, slight streaks, or minor discolorations caused by stains of rust, stains of mill scale, or stains of previously applied coating in less than 33 1/3% of the unit area is acceptable.

5. Coating/Application System:

a. Full Prime Coat: Apply one coat.

1) Basis of Design: PPG Industries, Inc.; AMERLOCK 2 VOC

High Solids Epoxy Coating @ 3.0 to 8.0 mils DFT.

b. Top Coat: Apply one coat with product selected from those below based upon required sheen.

1) Basis of Design: PPG Industries, Inc.; PSX 805 Satin Engineered
