Technical Specifications Summary

This document is a Technical Specifications file for construction of a concrete slab on grade foundation at the Berkshire National Fish Hatchery in Massachusetts. The work comprises excavation, site preparation, and concrete slab installation with two quote options: a base quote for a concrete slab with circular caissons and an alternate quote for a concrete slab with stem wall and footings. The project is for a future storage building to be constructed by the Government at a later date. All labor, materials, equipment, and incidentals necessary for project completion are the contractor's responsibility.

The specifications establish detailed requirements across multiple sections. Site work requirements include excavation and backfilling with imported gravel meeting specific gradation standards (0.25 inch sieve at 25-70% passing, No. 40 at 0-30%, No. 200 at 0-7%). Concrete specifications call for Type II Portland cement with air-entraining admixture, 4000 psi compressive strength at 28 days, 2-4 inch slump, 5-1/2 percent air entrainment, and a maximum water-cement ratio of 0.45. Reinforcement options include ASTM A615 grade 40 rebar or synthetic fiber mesh (polypropylene microfibers or macrofibers) at 3-7.5 pounds per cubic yard. Forms must comply with ACI 301, concrete placement must follow ACI 301 standards, and finish requirements include broom finish with sawcut crack control joints at 10-foot centers within 8 hours of placement. Contractor operations are restricted to weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., requiring 24-hour notice for material delivery and 48-hour notice for work commencement. Required submittals include Certificate of Insurance, concrete mix design, gravel materials certification, and reinforcement manufacturer information. The facility will remain operational during contract performance, necessitating careful work execution and daily cleanup.
