About this file

This is a Scope of Work (SOW) document for the Klamath Sucker Net Pen Rearing program managed by the Klamath Falls National Fish Hatchery. The project supports conservation and restoration of endangered Lost River and Shortnose Suckers in the Upper Klamath Basin by providing expanded rearing space and long-term acclimation areas to wild lake environments, which data shows increases post-stocking survival and persistence.

The SOW specifies detailed technical requirements for two identical net pen systems—one for Upper Klamath Lake and one for Gerber Reservoir. Each system consists of a 120' x 25' frame with dual 18" HDPE pontoons, 12" HDPE cross pipes, a 4' perimeter walkway and 24" center walkway, non-treated Douglas fir lumber joists and fascia, 1.5" x 1.5" fiberglass decking, and a 40" tall removable rail system. The fish net package includes two 25' x 59' x 15' nets with 0.25" x 0.25" 250/56 polyester panels, 3/8" polyester framing lines, 5/16" chain perimeter support, and 2" x 2" black twisted polyethylene bird netting. The anchor package comprises sixteen 1,650 lb concrete block anchors, galvanized anchor chain, anchor crown line floats, six 36" x 5' chain-through buoys, and reflective tape. A wave attenuator package includes a 24" x 50' DR17 HDPE pipe with 4' rubber skirt. Installation includes mobilization/demobilization, a 4-man crew, 12k forklift rental, boat/barge services, and assembly work. The systems must withstand 10" of lake freezing and impacts from floating ice chunks up to 10" deep. Shipping requires three 48' flatbed trucks per pen. The Gerber Reservoir installation will have unique labor and cost considerations due to increased travel and shipping distance to the remote location.

Klamath Sucker Net Pen Rearing (1/4” mesh size) Scope of Work (SOW)

The Klamath Falls National Fish Hatchery is currently in the process of building a new hatchery program to help conserve and restore listed endemic sucker populations in the Upper Klamath Basin, including endangered Lost River and Shortnose Suckers. In addition to needing more rearing space to grow suckers to a larger size, we also need to provide areas for long term acclimation to wild lake environments, which data has shown leads to higher post stocking survival and greater persistence and long term repeat detections of individuals from year to year than simply raising and stocking directly from the hatchery.

Fish Pen systems (with the netting rolled up on the deck for storage) have to withstand freezing in the lake of up to 10” and survive impacts by floating ice chunks that are up to 10” deep
