About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for drilling, developing, and testing a new water well at Eastern Virginia Rivers National Wildlife Refuge in Warsaw, Virginia.
The contractor must drill a 4-inch diameter PVC cased artesian well capable of delivering 10 gallons per minute of clean, fresh potable water. The well depth will be determined in the field with facility manager approval, with three potential water-bearing strata at 200-300 feet, 400-600 feet, and 800 feet deep; the 800-foot depth requires prior written approval. The well location must comply with Virginia Department of Health requirements regarding minimum distances from septic systems and building foundations and must be coordinated with the facility manager (Bill Crouch). The contractor is responsible for obtaining and paying for all required Well Construction permits from the State Health Department and local agencies before commencing field operations. Well materials include 4-inch PVC casing (ASTM F480), a continuous-slot factory wound well screen with solvent-welded joints, a standard pitless adapter with neoprene seals, and a submersible pump rated at 10 GPM with a minimum 0.5 HP single-phase motor featuring lightning and thermal overload protection. Electrical work must comply with the National Electric Code, utilizing Type UF direct burial cable (#10 copper or larger) installed 24 inches below grade with detectable warning tape placed 20 inches above the conduit. The contractor must develop the well using an approved method, test it for two hours after water level stabilization, disinfect it with 50 PPM chlorine solution, and submit a comprehensive final report including well logs, casing and screen locations, pumping test data, and water samples analyzed by a certified laboratory for chemical and microbiological quality per State and Local Public Health Agency requirements. All work must comply with State of Virginia regulations, ANSI/AWWA standards, and OSHA safety requirements (29 CFR 1910 and 1926).

B. The new well shall be capable of delivering a desired safe yield of 10 gallons per minute of clean, fresh, potable water. The estimated depth of the new well shall be determined in the field with concurrence from the facility manager. The area where the well is to be drilled may have three strata that typically yield decent water, one is from 200-300 feet deep, another one is 400-600 ft. If there is a need to drill to the 800 foot deep strata, the facility manager shall made aware of this and provide approval before proceeding.
