2.0 BACKGROUND AND EXISTING CONDITIONS:

The waterside theater is located at a National Park Service Unit called Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. The theater consists of terraced seating that can accommodate over 1600 individuals that can view the Lost Colony drama, which lasts approximately 2 hours and occurs between May and August each year. The theater is also occasionally used for other special events including musical performances and special events such as school graduations and concerts during which up to 1600 people occupy the theater. Food and drinks are served in areas adjacent to the theater and patrons, utilizing the seating, bring food and drink into the area while seated. The project site includes the seating area and the earthen walkways between the rows of seats. The access to the project site is through the existing parking lot and paved walkway leading to the seating area. Grounds and landscaping surrounding the pavement are archeologically sensitive and may not be disturbed.

The seats were last replaced was in 1998. Irwin Seating Company of Grand Rapids, Minnesota provided “Patriot model” chairs. There are three sizes of the seats installed per the 1998 seat design. The seat design showed 192 seats at 20” wide, 1,006 seats at 21” wide and 410 seats 22” wide. The seats are bolted on the vertical face of the concrete risers for each row of seats. Seats are anchored into the concrete risers with expansion bolts. The lower section is comprised of 17 rows, and the upper section is comprised of 8 rows.

The current maximum seating capacity is 1,499 seats as of Aug 8, 2021. Due to safety concerns, the existing seat are being removed and disposed of by the park. Mounting bolts have been left in place. In some locations the anchor bolts of the removed seats have been cut and in some locations the anchor bolts extend approximately 4 inches from the concrete face (see photos below). Mounting bolts left in place appear to be in serviceable condition and suitable for reuse.
