May 5, 2023
1. Introduction The Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail commemorates the 54-mile journey by Civil Rights advocates as they marched from Selma, AL to Montgomery, AL along U.S. Highway 80.
This march led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act on August 6, 1965. In August 1995, the State of Alabama designated U.S. Highway 80 between Selma and Montgomery as a National Scenic Byway to recognize its historical significance.
In January 1996, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) recommended that this route receive an All- American Road designation from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). In 1996, the U.S. Congress designated this route as a National Historic Trail and identified the NPS as the manager of this Trail. The Trail was established to: Commemorate the events, people, and route of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March of 1965, as a reminder of the right and responsibility of all Americans to participate fully in the election process and the maintenance of vigilance in protecting the right to vote.
