Working conditions shall be considered to be average for determining equipment rates using the schedule unless specified otherwise by the contracting officer. 1.4 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

1.4.1 General Project Features

a. This contract shall consist of cleaning and painting tainter gate number 1 and its associated items and Tainter Gate number 2 and its associated items in accordance with the contract plans and specifications. "Option 1" shall consist of cleaning and painting tainter gate number 3 and its associated items in accordance with the contract plans and Specifications. The tainter gates are numbered from left to right as viewed from upstream looking downstream.

b. Deer Creek Dam has three tainter gates measuring 42-foot wide by

32.28 - foot high with a 31 - foot radius. Each gate has a pair of strut arms on each end which connect the gate to a yoke assembly attached to the trunnion girder. The yoke assembly houses the trunnion

SECTION 01 00 00 Page 2 pin and trunnion pin bushing. For the intermediate piers, located between two consecutive tainter gates, a combination of ladders and stairs provide access to a trunnion girder which has a yoke on each end to support both gates.

c. All metal surfaces of the three spillway tainter gates and their associated items including trunnion bases, trunnion pins, trunnion girders, and trunnion girder support columns shall be cleaned by abrasive blast cleaning to SSPC-SP-5 (white metal) as specified hereinafter. Containment, collection, and disposal of removed material shall be as specified herein and in Section 01 57 20.00 10 ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION. Upon completion of surface preparation as specified, the surfaces shall be coated with one double spray coat of vinyl zinc-rich VZ-108d as specified hereinafter. After required drying time for the first coat, the entire surfaces shall be painted with three double spray coats of vinyl V-766e paint as specified hereinafter.

d. Prior to abrasive blast cleaning of the tainter gates, the side seal assemblies shall be removed from the tainter gates. The side seal assembly consists of a 5 inch by 3-1/2-inch by 3/8-inch angle, 2-1/2-inch by 1/2-inch round edge bar, rubber J-bulb and connecting bolts, and washers (the nuts are tack welded to the gate and shall not be removed). Each tainter gate has two side seal assemblies. These items may not have been removed during the previous paint contract, therefore there is a possibility that lead paint will be encountered under/behind these assemblies.

e. All metal surfaces of the disassembled side seal assembly components shall be cleaned and painted as specified with paint System 5-E-Z prior to re-assembly on the tainter gate. The rubber J-bulb, bolts and washers shall be replaced with new pieces matching the dimensions of the originals.

f. A number of structural steel welds shall be visually inspected and possibly repaired under this contract. The visual inspections shall look for cracked welds, lack of fusion, and unfinished welds. The contractor shall perform the visual inspection of the specified welds after the abrasive blast cleaning. Results of the visual inspections shall be submitted to the Government. Based on the results of the visual inspections the Government will determine which welds shall be repaired. The visual inspections and any necessary repairs shall be performed in accordance with Specification Section 35 20 16.46 TAINTER

GATES AND ASSOCIATED ITEMS.

g. After the gate has been abrasively blast cleaned and painted the side seal assemblies shall be re-installed on the tainter gate. The side seals shall be adjusted so that the J-bulbs just barely touched the embedded side seal plates in the pier. The J-bulb seals will be permitted to have a 1/8" preset to account for unevenness of the contact surfaces.

h. Existing bridge load capacity is equivalent to an AASHTO HS20-44 (MS 18) Truck loading. However, the Contractor shall submit all equipment, weights and loads for approval prior to mobilization.
