SITE SPECIFICS:
Location and Description: The project is located on BLM administered lands approximately 11 miles northwest of Modena, Utah in Iron County. Elevations range from 5,700 to 6,300 feet within the project site. The work location is shown on the project area reference map.
Access to the site: Access onto the project site is provided by a combination of paved highways and county dirt surface roads.
Equipment and heavy machinery may be staged at the Historic Stateline Town site, which is > 1 mile from start of the job site.
It is recommended contractors visit the area prior to bidding to get familiar with the roads. Four (4) wheel drive vehicles are recommended in and around the project area. It will be the contractor’s responsibility to get the equipment and supplies to the work site.
SPECIFIC TASKS:
Work Limits: The Eight Mile Spring Project Maps identify the area where the new exclosure will be built. The project area has been flagged and GPS’d with a GPS unit. It will be the contractor’s responsibility to work with the Project Inspector on the ground at the start of the contract to identify the boundaries that have been marked. The Contractor shall immediately locate the exclosure boundaries and have a clear understanding of the project requirements prior to beginning construction.
Specifications for Riparian Exclosures:
1. Construct four separate post and pole exclosures fence totaling 4,662 feet referencing the project location map and corner markers on the ground.
Description
2. The contractor shall provide skilled fence builders and equipment operators.
3. Wood posts shall be set in dug or drilled holes. Dig holes for setting wood posts to the depth as shown in the drawing for setting posts. Set posts plumb and to the spacing, grades and depths as shown on the drawing, unless staked otherwise. Posts shall be set to a preferred depth of 3’. Wood post spacing shall be spaced 10’ apart. Holes shall provide adequate open space around the post so that back-fill can be tamped the full depth around the post. Back-fill gradually and uniformly with soil around each post; compact back-fill firmly from the bottom of the hole to the ground surface. Wood posts shall be a maximum of 10 feet except in extreme rocky areas; the Project Inspector can approve the spacing greater than 10 feet.
4. 21’ poles shall be spaced on the posts as follows (Refer to Attached Pictures):
Pole 1: (bottom of pole from ground): 19”
Pole 2: (bottom of pole from ground): 30”
Pole 3: (bottom of pole from ground): 43”
*Total Fence Height approximately 46” (Fluctuations in total height based on pole diameter are expected)
Then the poles will be alternated as show in the picture as follows (Refer to Attached Pictures):
Pole 1: (bottom of pole from ground): 12”
Pole 2: (bottom of pole from ground): 25”
Pole 3: (bottom of pole from ground): 37”
*Total Fence Height approximately 44” (Fluctuations in total height based on pole diameter are expected)
5. Poles need to be attached to the posts by drilling a hole through the post and the pole and inserting a #2 Re-Bar ~22" long. Then with the use of a small pipe, the Re-Bar needs to be bent over so that it will allow for some flex in the wood as it gets wet and freezes but still holding the poles in position at the appropriate h height. (Note: The contractor will be responsible for providing an adequate amount of #2 Re-Bar to complete the exclosure to the above specifications).
CONTRACTOR FURNISHED EQUIPMENT:
Equipment Requirements It is highly recommended that the contractor utilizes a Skid Steer Loader (or equivalent) with a Post Hole Digger (Auger) attachment to ensure the efficient construction of the exclosure. The Contractor will need to provide enough equipment to complete the work in the specified performance window. Contractor shall furnish two (2) warning signs to be placed on roadside prior to entrance of work area. Signs shall be a minimum of three (3) feet by three (3) feet in dimension and shall warn of the possibility of shoulder work and possible road closures for the construction of the exclosures.
It is also recommended that the contractor supply adequate generators, drills, etc.… to attach the poles to the posts. In addition, the contractor will need adequate vehicles, trailers, and equipment to transport all materials (post (8’) and pole (22’), wire fence, etc.… to the job site and offload all the materials at the job site.
Equipment shall be washed with a high-pressure system before entering and exiting project lands. All soil and plant parts shall be removed to prevent the spread of noxious weeds in and out of the project area.
CONTRACTOR FURNISHED MATERIAL:
As discussed, the poles will need to be attached to the posts by drilling a hole through the post and the pole and inserting a #2 Re-Bar ~22" long. Then with the use of a small pipe the Re-Bar needs to be bent over so that it will allow for some flex in the wood as it gets wet and freezes but still holding the poles in position at the appropriate height. The contractor will be responsible for providing an adequate amount of #2 Re-Bar to complete the exclosure to the above the specifications).
