A. All equipment for mixing, transporting and applying mortar shall be clean and free from hardened mortar, dirt, ice, or other foreign matter.
B. Follow printed manufacturer’s instructions for mixing mortar.
C. Measure materials for mortars by volume, in a manner whereby proportions can be controlled within five percent. It is suggested that the measuring container be firmly tapped three times to settle the material and additional material added to top off the container to achieve consistency in the mixture. Measuring by shovel full shall not be allowed.
D. Thoroughly mix Natural Hydraulic Lime and masonry sand dry before adding any water. Add water and bring to proper consistency for use, consistency of brown sugar. Mix materials to achieve an evenly distributed mix throughout the batch. The mixture should be uniform in color and consistency. No admixtures, antifreeze ingredient or similar such contaminant will be allowed.
E. Repointing and masonry replacement mortar shall be St. Astier Natural Hydraulic Lime NHL 3.5 mixed with Janesville #1 sand at a ratio of 1:2.5 by volume.
3.3.3 Pointing of Mortar Joints in Stone
A. Walls should be presoaked with water a minimum of 10 minutes prior to pointing or as weather conditions dictate. Walls should be misted with water for duration of at least 3 minutes at the end of the day after initial installation. Keep newly pointed wall moist for a minimum of 3-days after installation, including weekends and holidays. As a minimum, mist the wall 3 times per day minimum – morning, noon and night.
B. Rinse stone joint with water to remove dust and mortar particles. Time the rinsing application so that at the time of pointing excess water has evaporated or run off. Joint surfaces should be damp but free from standing water.
C. The mortar material shall resemble the consistency of brown sugar during installation. This drier consistency enables the material to be tightly packed into the joint and allows for cleaner work and prevents shrinkage cracks as the mortar cures.
D. Joints should be pointed in layers or "lifts" where the joints are deeper than 1-1/4 inch. Apply in layers not greater than 1/2 the depth but not more than 1-1/4 inch or until a uniform depth is formed. Compact each layer thoroughly and allow it to become thumbprint hard before applying the next layer. Lift examples:
a. 3/16" joint depth (1/16" joint existing) point in one lift
b. 5/16" joint depth (1/8" joint existing) point in one lift
c. 5/8" joint depth (1/4" joint existing) point in one lift
d. 5/16" joint depth (3/8" joint existing) point in one lift
e. 1-1/4" joint depth (1/2" joint existing) point in one lift
f. 1-7/8" joint depth (3/4" joint existing) point in two lifts approx.-1" (each)
g. 2-1/2" joint depth (1" joint existing) point in three lifts approx. +3/4" (ea.) over 2-3/4 joint depth- point in lifts of no more than 1-1/4" (each) E. Point all mortar joints to the finish profile as demonstrated in the mock up.
F. When mortar is thumbprint hard the joints shall be finished to match the original historic joint profile. Texture joints as required to expose sand aggregate to match surrounding.
G. Keep mortar from drying out too quickly. Protection from direct sun, high winds for the first 72 hours after installation. Thoroughly soak the walls by misting or light spray a minimum of three times per day for the first 3 days. Protect freshly pointed areas with plastic sheeting for the first 24 hours after installation if necessary. The plastic sheeting shall not be allowed to come in direct contact with the wall where the joints are curing. Install spacer as necessary.
H. Where pointing work precedes overall cleaning of existing masonry, allow mortar to harden at least 30 days before beginning cleaning work.
3.3.4 Redress in Situ
A. Scale off all loose pieces of original stone from masonry unit that is intended to be removed, including surface material in powder or granular form and detachments of planer elements, spalls and chips. Contractor shall sound all stone on building by using the “ring test method” in order to distinguish fully intact stone from those in which delamination may be hidden or pieces of unstable material may not be immediately visible.
B. Using gentlest means possible, remove mortar, loose particles, and soil from stone by cleaning with hand chisels, needle scalers, brushes, and water.
C. Remove sealants by cutting close to stone with utility knife and cleaning with solvents.
D. Develop methods to redress the stone surface to match the original worn surface textures and profiles as approved by the Project Manager and Owner and as required.
E. It is the intention of this treatment to avoid introducing products to the face of the stone merely to enhance the look and color of the surface.
F. Notify the Project Manager for alternate stone treatment repair if open space exceeds permissible depth.
G. Using the center cut method and hand tools, prepare any joints in the work area for repointing as necessary. All areas requiring repointed shall be done at the same time as repointing of the surrounding area where stone is identified for replacement.
3.3.5 Stone Removal and Replacement
A. Remove stones as indicated on the drawings or if stones are deteriorated or damaged beyond repair. Notify the Project manager of any replacement stones that were not previously indicated on plans. Carefully remove entire units from joint to joint, without damaging surrounding stone, in a manner that permits replacement with full size units.
B. While removing designated stones, salvage as many of these stones as possible. Remove in an undamaged condition as many whole stone units as possible. Sort stone by size for future use (future City project). Clean and place on pallets.
C. Support and protect remaining stonework that surrounds removal area and adjoining construction in an undamaged condition.
D. Remove mortar, loose particles, and soil from intact stone by cleaning with hand chisels, needle scalers brushes, and water.
E. Remove any sealants by cutting close to stone with utility knife and cleaning with solvents.
F. Clean surrounding remaining stone removing mortar, dust, and loose particles in preparation for replacement.
G. Replace removed stone with new stone matching existing stone, including size, color and finish.
Install stainless steel pins and clips as indicated on plans. Butter vertical joints for full width before setting and set units in full bed of mortar, unless otherwise indicated.
H. Rake out mortar to 2 ½ time the width of the joint for newly set stones before mortar sets. All newly laid masonry shall have raked joints so that a single, final repointing can take place over the entire area of work. This is to achieve a consistent finish in the mortar joints for finish and texture.
3.3.6 Cleaning
A. Mortar shall be applied in such a manner as to minimize cleaning. The contractor shall demonstrate the ability to install the finish mortar joint with a brown sugar consistency that can be easily cleaned off without causing excessive mortar smearing.
B. After mortar has fully hardened, thoroughly clean exposed masonry surfaces of excess mortar and foreign matter; use wood scrapers, stiff-nylon or fiber brushes, and clean water, spray applied at low pressure.
C. Do not use metal scrapers or brushes.
D. Do not use acidic or alkaline cleaners.
E. Wash adjacent non-masonry surfaces, if applicable. Use detergent and soft brushes or cloths.
F. Sweep and rake adjacent pavement and floor to remove masonry debris. Where necessary, hand scrub surfaces to remove mortar, dust, dirt, and stains. Any rinse water shall be controlled as to not cause damage to the interior finishes of the chapel or its furnishings.
