About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document clarifying technical specifications for a 30,000-gallon liquid storage tank. The vessel will contain either liquid hydrogen or liquid methane with a minimum fluid temperature of -423°F. The tank is a non-jacketed liquid catch tank designed to force boil-off through a vent/bleed line, not a vacuum-jacketed vessel. All materials for the head and shell are specified as 304/304L stainless steel at single thicknesses without jacketing requirements.

The tank includes Class 150 Raised Face Weld Neck flanges with nozzles sized at 4 inches, 6 inches, two 18-inch openings, and a 24-inch manway located on the top of the vessel. Minimal piping is required—only enough to bolt flanges to nozzles without interference. The 4-inch flange should be positioned as close to the top as possible on one end, while the 6-inch and 18-inch flanges should be similarly positioned on the opposite end. No valves, relief systems, piping schematics (P&ID), or pressure relief systems are to be supplied by the contractor. For engineering documentation, generalized drawings are acceptable showing nozzle locations and vessel specifications, including a pressure vessel drawing with material heat numbers and welder IDs, a schematic P&ID of any installed components once defined, and a general arrangement drawing showing external dimensions and piping endpoints. There are no dimensional envelope restrictions for the completed tank.

Text version

• What fluid will be contained in the 30,000 gallon tank. There is a minimum fluid temperature of -423F, which would correspond to liquid hydrogen. If you can please confirm this? Fluid will be either liquid hydrogen or liquid methane.

• Liquid hydrogen tanks of this size are vacuum jacketed. The SOW doesn’t mention vacuum jacket. Could you please confirm that this is to be a vacuum jacketed tank?

This is not a jacketed vessel - the idea is to force boil off as it in a vent/bleed line.

This is meant to be a liquid catch tank.

• Under 3.2 (Materials), where it lists head and shell material, it lists one thickness for the head and one thickness for the shell and 304/304L material for both. If this is vacuum jacketed, do you want the vacuum jacket to be 304/304L thickness also?

This vessel is not jacketed.

• If this is a vacuum jacketed tank with Multi Layer Insulation, what type of NER or hold time are they looking for? - This vessel is not jacketed.

• In section 3.3 for Nozzles and Openings, the listing class 150 Raised Face Weld Neck flanges and (1) 4 inch nozzle, (1) 6 inch nozzle, (2) 18 inch nozzles, and a 24 inch manway with davit.

o If this is a vacuum jacketed tank, are the nozzle sizes listed for the pressure vessel (not the vacuum jacket). - This vessel is not jacketed.

o How much piping should be attached to the nozzles and where do you want the termination points located? - Only need enough piping to ensure we can bolt the flanges to the nozzles without interference. The 4" flange is to be located as close to the top of the vessel as possible on one end, while the 6" and 16" flanges are to be located as close to the top as possible on the other end.

o Can you please share the P&ID for this if available? - No P&ID available at this point.

o Are there any valves that need to be supplied? - No valves need to be supplied.

o Is there a relief system that we would need to supply for the pressure vessel or are they installing that? - No relief system is needed.

o If this is a vacuum jacketed tank, these vessels don’t have manway’s as this would be a leak path for the vacuum space. Is a manway required? - This is not a jacketed vessel, a manway is required, on the top of the vessel.

• In section 4.0 (Engineering & Documentation), there is a request as-built drawings. We don’t normally supply all of our fabrication drawings. Please confirm this is acceptable? - I want a generalized drawing/set of drawings that at minimum showing nozzle locations and stating specifications on the vessel. I do not need fabrication drawings. The bullet points below are acceptable.

o We can provide a pressure vessel drawing that would identify material heat numbers that could be linked to the material test reports and welder ID’s of the welder that made the pressure vessel welds.

o We can also provide a P&ID showing a schematic of any piping, valves and instrumentation that we are installing (once defined and agreed upon).

o We can also provide a general arrangement drawing showing the finished tank (external views) with overall dimensions and piping end point locations shown.

• Are there any dimensional envelope restrictions for the completed tank that need to be considered? - No dimensional restrictions.
