About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details a NASA-funded research project with the University of Florida to advance additive manufacturing technologies, specifically focusing on magnetic field-assisted finishing of GRCop-42 internal channels. The project's primary objectives include developing a polishing process for laser powder bed fusion samples, refining magnetic-assisted finishing (MAF) equipment, developing polishing tools, and characterizing channel performance through comprehensive analysis of surface integrity, flow resistance, heat transfer, corrosion resistance, and fatigue strength.

Key deliverables include polished NASA-provided workpieces and a public report in the form of a conference paper or journal article. The project has a 12-month performance period, requires a minimum 25% cost sharing from the contractor, and mandates interim updates every 6 months to NASA personnel. Deliverables will be shipped to the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, with the research aimed at evolving additive manufacturing technologies and completing documentation for alloy characterization initiated under a previous RAMPT project.

Statement of Work (SOW) for

Magnetic Field-Assisted Finishing of Additively Manufactured GRCop-42 Internal Channels and Characterization of Channel Performance

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Space Technology Mission Directorate

(STMD) continues to embrace public-private partnerships with industry and academia. MSFC, in support of the STMD, is providing this SOW partnering with the University of Florida to evolve additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, including surface enhancements for AM components supporting MSFC led technology development projects. The purpose of this SOW is to complete all documentation, reporting, and data dissemination for AM alloy characterization started under RAMPT.

The tasks are as follows:

1. Contractor shall develop a process to polish GRCop-42 laser powder bed fusion samples using magnetic assisted finishing. The task can include:

a. Refine the existing MAF equipment to polish GRCop-42 internal channels.

b. Develop polishing tools and characterize the tool motion inside the channels.

c. Clarify the polishing characteristics and material-removal mechanisms for internal channels.

2. Contractor shall characterize the relationships between the polishing processes, surface integrity, and channel performance. The specific tasks can include:

a. Examine flow resistance, heat transfer, corrosion resistance, and fatigue strength of channels polished with various processes (chemical milling, chemical mechanical polishying, abrasive flow machining, and MAF).

b. Using stylus roughness testers, optical profilers, and scanning electron microscopes, perform microscopic analysis of surfaces/sub-surfaces of parts polished using various processes.

c. Characterize the correlation between the polishing processes, surface geometries, and channel performance by comprehensively analyzing all data obtained in the project.

3. The cost sharing shall be a minimum of 25% of the total NASA provided budget; cost sharing such as, but not limited to, machine and process development, materials, labor, funding, and testing.

4. The contractor shall complete a detailed report in the form of a NASA Technical Memorandum (TM), Draft, Submitted, or Published Journal Article, Conference Paper, or other publicly available and traceable reports on results of the sample polishing.

5. The contractor provide an interim update at minimum every 6 months to discuss updates and results with NASA personnel and provide a status and related risks on progress.

Shipping

1. Contractor shall ship any deliverables as needed to:

Marshall Space Flight Center Central Receiving, Bldg 4631 Attn: Paul Gradl Huntsville, AL 35812

Period of Performance (POP)

• 12 months from authority to proceed (ATP)

Deliverables

1. Polished NASA-provided workpieces/samples.
