About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the manufacturing of two prototype carbon fiber shafts relevant to an Urban Air Mobility (UAM) motor application. The goal is to document the manufacturing process and results to assess the feasibility of carbon fiber shafts and validate design model code for improved motor performance.

The vendor shall manufacture the carbon fiber/epoxy composite shafts using a vacuum bagging and resin infusion process. The vendor shall provide the T700S carbon fiber material and manufacture the washout mandrels required for the overbraiding process. The vendor shall also bond metallic bearing sleeves onto the shafts. The final products shall be delivered to NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio within 6 months after the release of the purchase order. This SOW is related to a federal contract opportunity with NASA for the manufacturing of the carbon fiber shafts.

Statement of Work- Carbon Fiber Shaft Manufacturing

Summary

The goal is to manufacture a prototype carbon fiber shaft relevant to Urban Air Mobility (UAM) motor application. Documenting the manufacturing process and results will help assess the feasibility of carbon fiber (CF) shafts and validate design model code results for improved motor performance. The coordination of this project is relevant to NASA Glenn’s interest, leveraging for follow on activities such as installing bearing housing, bearings, magnets, and a CF hoop to test rotation capabilities.

Tasks

Vendor shall manufacture two carbon fiber (CF)/epoxy composite shafts as outlined below.

CF Shaft Design

Vendor shall iterate shaft design to ensure part manufacturing remains within budget.

Shaft shall adhere to the finalized design drawings provided by NASA.

CF Shaft Manufacture

Vendor shall provide T700S CF to manufacture braided preform, included in quote.

Vendor shall use vacuum bagging and resin infusion to manufacture the shafts.

The vendor or its subcontractors shall manufacture washout mandrels as required for the overbraiding process.

The decision will be made at the start of the contract to use either a traditional overbraid or hybrid triaxial/biaxial approach to manufacture the shaft. Either method may be used to accomplish the deliverable. A trial run shall be completed to confirm design conformity prior to final product.

This is government furnished equipment.

3-15-24

NASA will provide a finalized drawing of the CF shaft to vendor.

NASA will provide BMI epoxy resin to vendor for resin infusion process.

Metallic bearing sleeves of stainless steel created and supplied by vendor, included in quote.

Sleeves shall be bonded on to shaft by vendor.
