STATEMENT OF WORK & SPECIFICATIONS
FOR
Electrical Six Degree-of-Freedom Platform & Single Degree-of-Freedom Platform
INTRODUCTION
The NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Engineering Directorate has a requirement to modernize their existing Six Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) Platform to support engineering development and flight certification of spacecraft docking mechanisms.
The Six DOF platform will be a ground based test facility and will replace an existing hydraulic based system at
JSC.
1.0 SCOPE OF WORK
This Statement of Work (SOW) outlines the minimum requirements to provide engineering (design, analysis, fabrication, integration, test, verification, and acceptance) needed for developing and delivering the Six DOF Platform for use in the NASA JSC test facility. It also outlines the minimum requirements to provide a single DOF actuator, which will be assimilated into a testbed at NASA JSC.
The Contractor shall provide all resources necessary to deliver the Six DOF Platform and the Single DOF actuator. The scope of developing the Six DOF platform includes performing the necessary systems engineering and integration, acceptance test plan, procedures development and testing required ensuring the specifications are met. The Single DOF actuator testbed that will include the actuator as well as the same controller that is used in the Six DOF Platform.
The Contractor shall provide additional engineering support for overall Six DOF Platform application integration and test on an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity basis (SOW 5.0).
2.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
2.1.1 Six DOF ARCHITECTURE
2.1.2 Single DOF ARCHITECTURE
2.2 FACILITY
2.2.1 MOUNTING
The Six DOF platform shall be bolted to the facility floor with NASA-provided studs and nuts. Mounting specification shall be agreed upon before delivery of Six DOF platform to facility.
The Single DOF actuator shall be integrated into a NASA-provided testbed within the facility. Mounting specification shall be agreed upon before delivery of Single DOF actuator (It is anticipated that interfaces for vendor provided hardware to the testbed are desired to be consistent with vendors existing hardware designs/products to minimize new work and will be assessed/confirmed).
2.2.2 POWER
The facility has 460 VAC / 380 Amps available to power the Six DOF Platform and Single DOF Platform.
2.3 Six DOF SPECIFICATIONS

2.4 COMMUNICATION ARCHITECTURE FOR SIX DOF AND SINGLE DOF
Individual Motor Drives and Sensors will be EtherCAT enabled slave devices that allow direct communication from NASA provided EtherCAT Master. Vendor supplied kinematic motion controller must be swappable with a NASA supplied kinematic motion controller. This changeable configuration will be made through the connection of a single Ethernet cable.
Expose functionality of all tunable variables in the motor drive and sensors to the EtherCAT master.
Communication with vendor supplied kinematic motion controller is UDP or equivalent.
2.5 SINGLE DOF SPECIFICATIONS
The One DOF deliverable will consist of a single electric actuator. This actuator must be identical to the actuators used in the Six DOF platform (specifications outlined above). This actuator will be incorporated into a testbed housed at NASA JSC, and will need to be supplied with the same command and control software, hardware, and power interfaces used to operate the Six DOF platform. This will benchmark the closed-loop control performance of the system for contact dynamics.
3.0 TEST/INSPECTION/DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS
3.1 The following testing/inspections shall be performed by the Contractor:
(i) Dimensional inspection
Deliverable shall be inspected to verify that basic dimensions are as specified. The results of the dimensional inspection shall be provided to NASA in the Acceptance Data Package (DRD 6).
(ii) Power-on, Burn-in, Exercise, and Performance Verification Test
The Contractor shall power on and exercise deliverables and characterize performance with the results provided to NASA in the Acceptance Data Package (DRD 7).
3.2 The following testing/inspections shall be performed together with NASA and Contractor:
(i) Pre-delivery check-out Inspection
NASA shall observe final functional tests at contractor manufacture location (DRD 9).
(ii) Post-delivery check-out Test
The Contractor shall support integrated system testing. NASA will define and provide the test profiles to characterize the as-delivered performance (DRD 10).
3.3 Documentation/Support Requirements
The Contractor shall supply the following documentation/support for NASA review and approval,
(i) Engineering Drawings (DRD 1): Final top-level envelope/interface drawings shall be provided to NASA for review and approval prior to start of manufacturing.
(ii) Engineering Analysis (DRD 2): Stress analysis of structural components shall be provided to NASA for review and approval.
(iii) System Characteristics / Performance Data (DRD 3): A set of performance related characteristics and parameters of the platform and sub-components that will assist NASA in the development of a full time-domain base physical model of the system that represent the operational system under load. This set of characteristics and parameters would include data such as, but not limited to, actuator component stiffness, backlash, mechanical efficiency, gear ratios, ball screw lead, actuator motor speed-torque data, motor stall torque, connection-point friction/stiction data, linear friction/stiction data, test data from sine sweeps response, and inertia and mass data. The list of available data shall be provided to NASA for review and approval.
(iv) Controller Interface ICD (DRD 4): Interface definition between the Facility Supervisor Controller and vendor supplied 6DOF Platform Kinematic Controller, reference architecture diagram.
(v) Communication Architecture EtherCAT Interface ICD (DRD 5): Interface definition between the EtherCAT Master and EtherCAT Slave modules to inform NASA provided custom EtherCAT master.
(vi) Acceptance Test Procedure (DRD 6): The Contractor shall document all inspection and test requirements in an Acceptance Test Procedure, and provide the procedure for NASA review and approval.
(vii) Acceptance Test Data (DRD 7): A package documenting all test and inspection results shall be prepared by The Contractor and furnished to NASA for review and approval prior to shipment.
(viii) Development Plan and Schedule (DRD 8): The Contractor shall provide a summary of Development tasks and an associated tasks development schedule with monthly updates.
