About this file

This document contains questions and answers related to a request for proposals for high gain antenna flight units for NASA's WFIRST project. Goddard Space Flight Center is seeking to procure flight-ready high gain antennas including the antenna structure, reflector, subreflector, and feed. Key details include: the allowable mounting footprint area is negotiable; the vendor should align the antenna volume model to the reference model by rotating 90 degrees around the X axis and moving along the Z axis by 260mm; thermal blankets of up to 0.25kg should be accounted for in structural analysis; and Goddard will provide technical support for pre- and post-environmental RF performance testing including VSWR and antenna pattern measurements to be conducted in an antenna test range.

Questions and Answers on RFP 80GSFC20R0028;

High Gain Antenna Flight Units for the WFIRST Project

Question #1: The current area 160 (6.3”) X 121.92 (4.8”) as depicted in Detail A and

Note 3 on drawing 2221336-(1).pdf), (extract below), would appear inadequate as structural interface to restrain a reflector of this mass in the launch environment at the gimbal / boom and achieve the 75Hz requirement. Are there additional locations on the

HGA structure that can be used for launch restraints?

Answer #1: The area of the mounting footprint is negotiable. The vendor may propose a minimum mounting area interface necessary to meet the structural requirements of the

Specification.

Question #2: Please provide location of STEP_2221336_prt.stp (HGA volume) relative to HGA Reference STEP File v1.0.STEP. Or provide STEP_2221336_prt.stp in the same coordinate system as HGA Reference STEP File v1.0.STEP. Currently, the models are not in the same coordinate system and there isn’t a good way of referencing the surfaces to the stay-in zones, (screen grab below).

Answer #2: To align the spacecraft model of the HGA volume (22221336) to the HGA reference STEP file (WFIRST-ANYS-0153):

1. Rotate HGA volume 90 deg about the X-axis

2. Move along Z by -260 mm to center of the volume. However, the dish can move as needed as long as it stays within the allowable volume.

Here’s an example of the HGA Reference STEP file fitting within the HGA Volume:

Question #3: Are thermal blankets to be accommodated in the current structural analysis requirements? If so please provide an NTE mass.

Answer #3: We expect to blanket the back of the S-band feed as well as the cable running up the strut to the feed. Please assume a NTE mass of 0.25 kg. total.

Question #4: Please provide more definition of scope regarding pre and post environmental RF performance testing per 10.5.1.2 and 10.5.1.3 of WFIRST-COMM-

SPEC-0090? Will GSFC provide RF technical support for the testing?

Answer #4: Goddard expects to provide technical support for all RF Testing.

10.5.1.2 VSWR Performance Test is a direct VSWR measurement at the WR-34 input.

10.5.1.3 Antenna Pattern Performance Test: Pattern measurements in an

Antenna Test Range is expected. The number of pattern cuts depends on the type of test range. For a far field range, the vendor can consider the following plan: a minimum of 4 principal plane cuts through the beam peak with 0.02 degree resolution from -1 to +1 deg.
