Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs
PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
1. Statement of Need and Purpose: This acquisition is necessary to measure the electrical activity of a network of cultured neurons. This instrument is in support of neurodegenerative disease research within the Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias.
2. Background Information and Objective: National Institute on Aging Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (CARD) is using organotypic slice cultures as a model to investigate biological changes that may contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Frontotemporal dementia or Alzheimer's. To assess, glia-induced pathogenic mechanisms, CARD will introduce human-derived iAstrocytes or iMicroglia carrying pathogenic variants in dementia-related genes, either directly, indirectly or via their supernatant to our organotypic cultures. In parallel, CARD will set up a gene editing system to introduce INDELs and study loss-of-function variants associated with dementia in our organotypic cultures. A multielectrode array instrument is required for these studies.
3. Generic Name of Product: Multielectrode Array Instrument
