1.0 BACKGROUND
The Vaccine Branch (VB) is a research branch of the Center for Cancer Research (National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland). It conducts a program of clinical and laboratory research designed to 1) elucidate basic mechanisms of immune response and molecular virology, and 2) apply these to the design and develop vaccines and immunotherapies for the prevention and treatment of cancer and AIDS, as well as viruses that cause cancer.
The AMRVS conducts research on two retroviruses, HTLV-1, and HIV, that respectively cause cancer and neuropathology, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The main
National Cancer Institute RFQ #75N91024Q00011 Page 2 of 32 purpose of the AMRVS is preventing HTLV-1 and HIV infection by developing effective vaccines, testing them in preclinical and clinical studies and analyzing the immune responses elicited by immunizations.
