About this file

This Addendum No. 1, issued January 30, 2025, modifies the bidding documents for the Otter Creek GEM Bridge Replacement project in Houghton County, Michigan, managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and U.P. Engineers & Architects, Inc. The project involves fabrication and installation of a timber bridge replacement, with specifications covering bridge decking, railing, approach rail lumber, spacers, and miscellaneous lumber components. A pre-bid meeting was held virtually on January 22, 2025, with 21 representatives from various construction and engineering firms in attendance. The addendum clarifies and modifies technical specifications for fabricated timber bridge construction, including requirements for lumber materials, nail laminated decks, and construction execution details. Bidders are required to acknowledge receipt of Addendum No. 1 on their bid forms.

The addendum provides specific technical modifications to Section 32 34 00 of the specifications regarding fabricated timber bridge construction. Key changes include requirements for miscellaneous lumber framing using Stress Group D Spruce, Pine, Fir species with rough-sawn specifications at 19 percent maximum moisture content; nail laminated deck specifications using four-inch by two-inch nominal thickness laminations with specific surface requirements; and attachment procedures using galvanized spikes at 12 to 18-inch intervals. For decks with spreader beams, the manufacturer must use sanding or planing to reduce high points, with a maximum allowable gap specification, and treat sanded areas with brush-on copper naphthenate solution while avoiding application directly over water due to toxicity to aquatic life. Additional requirements include contractor responsibilities for shimming, bolt tightening, and Loctite application on the final construction day in the presence of the contracting officer. No pricing information, set-asides, or funding sources are specified in this addendum document.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 APPLICATION

A. General Framing:

1. Carefully select all members. Select individual pieces so that knots and defects will not interfere with placement of bolts, when nailing or making connections.

2. Discard defective pieces.

3. Set structural members level and plumb, in correct position.

4. Fasten framing according to applicable code.

5. Make provisions for erection loads and for sufficient temporary bracing to maintain structure safe, plumb, and in alignment until completion of erection and installation of permanent bracing.

6. Place horizontal members, crown side up.

7. Construct load-bearing framing members full length without splices.

B. Site-Applied Wood Treatment:

1. Apply preservative treatment to members that are site drilled or cut.

2. Treat Site-sawn cuts by applying preservative according to AWPA UC4A.

3. Allow preservative to dry prior to erecting members.

C. Site-Applied Cold Galvanizing:

1. Provide bolts of appropriate length. In the event that longer bolts are supplied, cut off excess length and apply cold galvanizing as directed by the engineer.

2. Bolts shall not protrude more than 3x the bolt diameter past the nut once installed and tightened.

3. Apply zinc rich cold galvanizing to any fasteners that are field cut w/ minimum 95% zinc content.

3.2 NAIL LAMINATED DECKS

A. Use 4 inch 2-inch nominal thickness laminations, surface one edge hit or miss ⅛ inch scant (S1E-H or M ⅛-inch scant), and one side hit or miss ⅛ inch scant (S1S-H or M ⅛-inch scant).

B. Place the laminations on edge and at right angles to the centerline of roadway. Attach each piece to the preceding piece using galvanized spikes of sufficient length to pass through two pieces and at least halfway through the third piece. Drive spikes at each end and at approximately 12 18-inch intervals alternately diving near the top and bottom edges, per 9.9.6.1 of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications

C. Where timber stringers are used, use spikes to toenail every other piece to every other stringer. When steel stringers are used, securely attach the pieces using approved galvanized metal clips.

D. Use pieces of sufficient length to bear on at least four stringers. Do not splice pieces between stringers.

Space end joints on a stringer no closer than every third piece. Space end joints in adjoining pieces no closer than every second stringer.

E. For decks with spreader beams, the bridge manufacturer shall use a belt sander or planer to ‘knock down’ high points along the underside of the deck in the location of the spreader beams in order to reduce the number of uneven boards where the spreader beam is attached. The maximum allowable gap between the spreader beam and the underside of the deck shall be ¼”. Manufacturer shall treat sanded/planed areas with a brush on copper naphthenate solution. Do not apply copper naphthenate solution directly over water it is toxic to aquatic life.

F. After installation of the deck and spreader beams, the contractor shall tighten all spreader beam nuts with a hammer drill and install Nelson 8” composite wood shims in all locations where the top of the spreader beam does not contact the bottom of the deck using multiple shims as required to shim entire board widths.

Once inserted, install #8x1-1/2” long coated deck screw behind each shim to hold tight in place.

G. Contractor shall add additional shims and retighten all nuts on the last day of construction in the presence of the contracting officer to ensure all nuts are snug. Install Loctite red on all bolts after tightening.

3.3 TOLERANCES

A. As required by Section 705 of 2020 MDOT Standard Specifications for Construction.

B. Maximum Out-of-Position: 1 inches.

C. Other Framing Members: 1/4 inch from indicated position, maximum.

D. Surface Flatness of Bridge Decking: 1/4 inch in 10 feet minimum, and 1/2 inch in 30 feet maximum.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Section 01400 – Quality Control.
