FISHING CREEK SEDIMENT SAMPLING

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD STATION

ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND

Sediment characterization is required to determine suitability for disposal into most dredged material management areas (DMMAs). The selected DMMA for the Fishing

Creek dredging project is the Cox Creek site. The Port of Maryland requires sediment testing prior to issuing a disposal permit. In order to support the disposal portion of the dredging project, Waterway Surveys performed sediment sampling in Fishing Creek.

Once the dredging plans were completed, five sample locations were selected within the dredging template to characterize the material. The sample locations and coordinates are provided on the attached diagram. Three locations were selected in the immediate vicinity of the pier structures, one was sited in a small shoal area at Station

9+00 and another site was located at a shoal near the end of the channel (Station

68+00).

Waterway collected the samples on January 26, 2017. The weather was sunny and clear. DGPS was used to locate the selected sample sites and a ponar grab sampler was used to collect the bottom sediment. The ponar sampler was thoroughly cleaned with an alconox wash and rinsed with site water prior to each sample site. The sediment was mixed and homogenized to form a composite sample. The sample was then transferred to sterile jars from the testing laboratory and stored on ice during transient. For Quality Assurance/Quality Control, a field duplicate sample was collected at Station 9+00. A copy of the chain of custody is attached to this document.

Test America was the chosen testing laboratory. They are state certified to run each of the tests required by the Port of Maryland. The results have been summarized in a table attached to this report and the spreadsheet from the testing lab has also been included. The Port of Maryland does not have a formalized evaluation criteria for the results; therefore, a specific discussion is not provided. The results, however, indicate that this material is free of contaminants. Most chemical compounds were not detected in the material (below the method detection limits) and those analytes that were detected (such as the metals) were at or below natural background levels.

The dredged material from the Fishing Creek channel is suitable for placement into the

Cox Creek disposal site.
