NOTE
It’s not possible to know how thick the existing clear coat is in all areas, and it may be difficult to remove damaged or discolored clear coating without damaging the appearance of the flakes beneath. For these reasons the job should be planned as if application of flakes may be required over a significant portion of the specified surface to ensure scheduling problems do not occur during execution.
3.3 Epoxy flake system resealing. The Contractor shall remove coating from, and then recoat, the deck areas specified in Table 1 above. Sand down the existing deck covering areas to remove all discolorations and damage, which may require covering removal into the colored area. Reapply color coat and flakes to obtain uniform color, as required. Reapply sealers. Renew PC 6 of Coast Guard Drawing 154 WPC 634-301 (slip-resistant treads) where disturbed. Maintain the existing net weight of the deck covering system by maintaining the original thickness of the epoxy flake system; generally apply no more material than was removed. Allow sealer to cure for the manufacturer recommended times.
CAUTION
Epoxy flake system is applied over delicate joiner deck on most of the 2nd deck areas.
Do not damage joiner deck during removal of top layer of existing deck material.
To minimize impact on cutter weight & moment, do not add excessive deck covering material, beyond what was removed. Make new deck covering thickness as close as practicable to the original, pre-resealed thickness.
