About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for maintenance and repair services on a Clausing Colchester lathe machine tool.
The vendor will perform the following technical services: lubricant changes using 5 gallons of Mobil DTE 24 and 1 gallon of Mobil Vactra No. 2; drive belt replacement including removal of the headstock cover and rear guard, relief of tension on the motor mount, installation of new belts, and re-tensioning with clutch mechanism adjustment; lathe leveling using a precision machinist level (.05MM) on the bed ways with adjustments to feet or shims for longitudinal and transverse alignment; headstock alignment by loosening mounting bolts and using adjustment screws to achieve minimal runout (ideally under 0.0001"–0.0002") with verification using a dial indicator or test cuts; cross-slide backlash adjustment through manipulation of the brass nut and hex screws to reduce movement from approximately .100 inches to .020 inches or less; clutch adjustment after a 30-minute warm-up period at 1,600 RPM by tapping the clutch collar to advance the adjustment pin through sequential notches; and brake adjustment by tightening the inner nut clockwise to reduce braking time. The vendor must be authorized as a technical repair facility representing The Clausing Colchester Manufacturing Company.

1. Statement of Work for Clausing Colchester Lathe. (SOW) The technician will provide these services:
CHANGE LUBRICANTS 5 GALLONS OF MOBIL DTE 24 and 1 GALLON OF MOBIL VACTRA NO. 2 DRIVE BELTS Access the Drive: Remove the top headstock cover and the rear guard to expose the countershaft and motor assembly. Relieve Tension: Release the variable speed control lever and turn the motor mount tension screw to slacken the belt. Remove Old Belt from the pulleys. Install New Belt: Place the new belt over the pulleys.
Adjust Tension: Re-tension the motor and, if necessary, adjust the clutch mechanism (1/8 turn clockwise is often recommended to tighten)
LEVEL LATHE Use a precision machinist level (.05MM) on the bed ways, adjusting the feet or using shims to ensure the lathe is level both longitudinally and transversely. The process involves placing the level near the headstock and tailstock, ensuring consistent readings across the bed.
ADJUST HEADSTOCK Aligning the lathe headstock involves loosening the mounting bolts and using adjustment screws to pivot the headstock, aiming for minimal runout (ideally under 0.0001"–0.0002") using a dial indicator.
Check the alignment with a test bar or by making test cuts, ensuring the headstock is parallel to the bed ways.
ADJUST BACKLASH OUT OF CROSS SLIDE Grasp the cross-slide at either end and try to slide it back and forth.
You will probably feel a movement of about .100 inches or more. By performing the adjustment described here you should be able to reduce this movement to about .020 or less.
The cross-slide lead screw engages with a rectangular brass nut attached to the underside of the cross-slide by two hex screws. A third hex screw presses against the top of the brass nut to adjust its height.
By adjusting this middle screw and the two mounting screws, you can adjust the brass nut to minimize backlash in the cross-slide.
ADJUST CLUTCH Warm-up: Some manufacturers suggest running the lathe for 30 minutes at roughly 1,600 RPM before adjusting to ensure the metal has expanded to its operating temperature. There will be a series of holes in the clutch collar. Begin to adjust the clutch by tapping it gently with the screwdriver. As you turn the clutch, the pin should fall into the next notch in the sequence. adjust the clutch by one notch at a time. The adjustment pin should reset at every step, requiring you to loosen it before adjusting it another notch.
ADJUST BRAKE Hold the inner nut steady and loosen the outer lock nut.
Tighten: Turn the inside nut clockwise. Even a half-turn can reduce braking time by approximately 1 second.
