About this file
This document contains answers to technical questions regarding a federal contract solicitation for trail improvements in Anchorage, Alaska. The solicitation is for connecting trails and requires steel pipe piles to be installed in accordance with Section 551, as well as bridges to be constructed using non-weathering steel under Section 717 and AWS D1.5 welding standards. The work must be fully complete and ready for use by August 29, 2023 according to the contract, though other documents specify a later completion date of November 14, 2023. We see there are bridge specifications in the solicitation, but we don’t see any specifications for the pilings. For example Sheet H‐1 states under the Bridges General Notes that the specification for structural steel is under Section
717 which is all non weathering steel (i.e. A588).
There is no specific call out for the pilings and what grade of pipe they should be. In most applications the piling typically falls under its own spec and does not fall under the bridge spec. The welding detail is also for bridge spec
(AWS D1.5), and we do not see welding details called out for piling. Are we to assume that the piling materials are to fall under section 717, and welding detail to fall under AWSD1.5? Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated.
In accordance with the Bid Schedule and Sheet H.1, Steel Pipe Pile, In‐Place is a 551 Pay Item; so see FP‐
14 Section 551 which specifies the required work for
Driven Piles, and references materials under
Subsection 551.02.
