About this file

This is a Specification Control Drawing (SCD) for an RS-232 RFI/Surge Adapter manufactured by AAI Corporation. The adapter is designed to provide electromagnetic interference (EMI) and surge protection for RS-232 signal lines, with specifications including filtering 24 of 25 pins, operating at up to 38,400 baud, and withstanding voltage transients. Key technical requirements include a 3 dB point at 1.6 MHz, minimum insertion loss across various frequencies, and surge protection of 500 watts per signal line.

The adapter is rated for operating temperatures between -17°C to +49°C and storage temperatures from -51°C to +60°C. It features 25-pin subminiature socket connectors with #4-40 clinch nuts, and must undergo a functional test by the manufacturer to verify pin continuity and filter effects. The suggested source of supply is Caron Enterprises, Inc. in Girard, PA. The document includes detailed requirements for workmanship, visual and mechanical inspection, packaging, and marking, with two optional marking approaches specified for product identification.

1.0 SCOPE

1.1 SCOPE. This specification covers the requirement for a RS-232 ,RFI

(Radio Frequency Interference) / surge adapter.

2.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

2.1 ISSUE OF DOCUMENTS. The following documents of the issue in effect on date of invitation for bids or request for proposal form a part of this specification.

2.2 MILITARY STANDARDS.

DOD-STD-100 Engineering Drawing Practices

MIL-STD-129 Marking for Shipment and Storage

2.3 OTHER DOCUMENTS.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE, TRANSIENT SUSCEPTIBILITY STANDARD

3.0 REQUIREMENTS

3.1 ORDER OF PRECEDENCE. This drawing takes precedence over documents referred to herein and shall be interpreted in accordance with DOD-STD-100.

3.2 VISUAL. The adapter shall meet the dimensional requirements of

Figure 1.

3.3 SPECIFICATIONS.

3.3.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION. The RS-232, RFI/surge adapter shall be a filter/surge suppressor to perform EMI (Electromagnetic Inter-ference) and surge protection on RS-232 signals.

3.3.2 DETAIL SPECIFICATION. The filter/suppressor shall operate with standard RS-232 signals levels at up to 38,400 baud and shall be wired pin to pin (i.e. pin 2 to pin 2, pin 3 to pin 3, etc.). Of the 25 pins, 24 pins shall be filtered. Pin 1 shall not be surge protected or filtered. Pin 1 is a chassis ground and shall be wired straight through (ie pin 1 to pin 1). Pin 1 shall not be connected to case ground. Surge protection shall be shunted to case ground.

3.3.3 POWER REQUIREMENTS.

Current rating : load current, .2 amperes per pin maximum

Operating voltage : 30 VDC (Volts Direct Current)

DC resistance : 0.2 ohms or less

3.3.4 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS. Both the input and output connectors shall be 25 pin subminiature socket (receptacle) type connectors. The input connector shall be marked as input and shall have #4-40 clinch nuts. The output connector shall have #4-40 clinch nuts.

3.3.5 EMI FILTER CHARACTERISTICS The filter/suppressor shall include EMI filters. Of the 25 pins, 24 pins shall be filtered. Pin 1 shall not be filtered. The EMI filter shall meet the following requirements:

3 dB point shall be 1.6 MHz .1 Mhz

Minimum no load insertion loss (approximate) 2 dB:

FREQUENCY dB

5 MHz 10

10 16

50 30

100 36

3.3.6 SURGE SUPPRESSION CHARACTERISTICS Surge suppression shall be in accordance with the National Weather Service, Transient

Susceptibility Standard.

Cross talk transients: Quotation from National Weather Service, Transient Susceptibility Standard.

"Cross talk can result from the transients on AC power lines being coupled into adjacent signal or control lines. Therefore, the same transient pulse used in the power line test shall be inductively coupled to the signal/control line." Figures 2 and 3 show the voltage transient and test setup. The test filters shall be subjected to 50 repetitions of the above transient. The filter must protect the "equipment under test" from permanent damage when

| SCALE NONE | CAGEC 97384 | REVISION E | SHEET 4 |

subjected to this transient; i.e., the "equipment under test" shall continue to operate normally after transient has been applied.

The surge protection shall be a minimum of 500 watts per signal line.
