Midway Atoll NWR Quarantine Protocol Phase 1

QUICK REFERENCE

August 3, 2021

Please follow these guidelines for the first 10 days of your time on Midway:

1. Maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet from other island residents when practicable.

2. Wear a facemask whenever you are interacting with other island residents or in any buildings, other than your private accommodations or home unless you are cohabitating and your roommate requests you wear a mask.

3. Clipper House Dining Facility will be available to you; however, you will not have access to the building interior and meals will be served to you (made to order from a variety of selections) outside at a designated table, or to-go.

4. If you begin to feel ill, consult the Physician’s Assistant (X802 or X837).

5. The 10 days will begin on the first full day on Midway. This means if you arrive on a Tuesday, you will be able to come out of quarantine on the second Saturday of your stay/return.

NOTE: At the beginning of your 11th day on Midway, if you do not develop any symptoms of the COVID disease, you may cease these protocols and fully interact with island residents.

Midway Atoll NWR Quarantine

Phase 1 Protocol August 3, 2021

Introduction: Welcome to Midway Atoll! Midway Atoll is extremely remote with limited access to regular air transportation. Our medical resources are also limited. The following rules are designed to greatly reduce the risk of introducing the coronavirus to the residents of Midway Atoll.

Flight to Midway:

1. Following State of Hawaii guidelines, wear a facemask while in the Signature Air waiting room and maintain social distancing as much as possible.

2. A USFWS Manager will take your temperature and ask you CDC recommended screening questions to evaluate your risk of potentially being infected by the coronavirus. Upon successful screening, you will be allowed to board the plane as directed by the flight crew. The pilots will be similarly screened prior to you boarding the plane.

3. Wear a facemask for the duration of the flight, except while drinking or eating, and upon deplaning at Midway Atoll.

4. Do not deplane until invited to do so; continue wearing your mask until you arrive at your designated residence.

10-day Island Quarantine

1. Clipper House Dining Facility:

a. Because all island residents gather at the Clipper House and the food service is buffet-style, you will not have access to the inside of the building. There will be a designated table located on the building’s deck for your use. Only quarantining individuals may sit at this table. A separate table has been designated for other island residents that may wish to eat outside. The Clipper House staff will provide you with a daily menu for your meal selection. You will write down your selection and tape it to the window for the cooks to see.

You will be served at your table or you may order your food to-go.

2. Social Distancing:

a. During the quarantine period, maintain a social distance of 6 feet from all island residents when practicable.

3. Facemask Use:

a. Wear a facemask when interacting with others at all times.

b. Wear a facemask whenever you are in a building, other than your private accommodations.

4. Cohabitation:

If quarantined persons are cohabitating in one residence, the quarantined individuals shall respect the other person’s wishes in terms of wearing facemasks inside the residence. Each individual shall use a consistently separate toilet facility within the residence, as practical. Residents are encouraged to wash and sanitize their hands regularly.

5. Violation of Midway’s quarantine rules:

Violation of the quarantine rules will result in immediate home quarantine and possible expulsion from the island on the next available flight.

6. Completion of 10-day quarantine:

After completing 10 days of quarantine while remaining healthy, you will have full access to the Island and other residents beginning on day 11.

Departing Flights to Honolulu, Hawai'i:

You will be provided a facemask if you do not have one. Passengers must wear the facemask for the duration of the flight except to eat and drink.

This protocol will be reviewed monthly by the project leader to ensure the health and safety of all Island residents.
