About this file

This document is an attachment to a federal contract solicitation for the Lumbre Stewardship project at Carson National Forest's Camino Real Ranger District. It serves as a technical specification guide for snag and log decay classification rather than a standalone contract document.

The attachment provides detailed classification criteria for snags (dead standing trees) and downed logs across five decay classes (1-5). For snags, the classification matrix specifies characteristics including bark condition, heartwood decay, sapwood decay, limb presence, top breakage, bole form, and time since death. Snags are categorized from Class 1 (dead/recent with intact bark and minimal decay) to Class 5 (75%+ missing bark with advanced decay and absent limbs). For downed logs, the classification similarly progresses from Class 1 (intact with present twigs) to Class 5 (soft, powdery wood with oval shape and mostly below-ground position). The document includes visual illustrations of each decay class and photographic examples showing on-the-ground conditions. Operational guidance specifies that trees in Class 1 condition (Image 1) shall remain in the unit and not be cut, while trees in other conditions with merchantable characteristics (Image 2) shall be cut and taken to landings for processing. Downed logs in better condition (Image 4) shall be harvested and processed at the landing, while highly decomposed material (Image 3) shall remain on site.
