CDC-RFA-EH20-2005

Strengthening environmental health capacity (EHC) to detect, prevent, and control environmental health hazards through data-driven and evidence-based approaches

Component B and C Potential Projects, Years 2–5

Component (B): Strengthen the capacity of environmental health (EH) programs and services – Strengthen EH programs and services in areas such as drinking water, recreational water, safe water management plans, rodent control, food safety, exposure assessments, outbreak investigations, and the range of EH programs identified by the UNCOVER EH practice and workforce assessment.

Potential projects in Years 2–5 include, and are not limited to:

Improving Food Establishment Food Safety – Strengthen EH program capacity to identify the prevalence of food safety hazards occurring in food establishments, understand the underlying causes of the hazards, and develop, implement, and assess interventions to address the causes.

Supporting Integrated Pest Management Approaches for Community-Wide Rodent Management – Reduce rodent infestations in vulnerable areas by supporting EH programs to use data and build partnerships to plan and implement integrated pest management approaches for community-wide rodent management.

Enhancing Legionnaires’ Disease Prevention, Outbreak Response, and Intervention – Build EH program capacity for Legionnaires’ disease prevention, response, and intervention. This includes improving environmental assessments during outbreak response and sporadic case investigations, conducting evaluation of interventions resulting from outbreak investigation, and increasing utilization of water management program compliant with industry standards

Implementing Comprehensive Children’s EH Programs – Build comprehensive programs and services that respond to children’s EH issues and community-based concerns. This includes ensuring the health and safety of recreational and educational facilities, including schools and daycares.

Strengthening Programs and Services for Regulated and Permitted Facilities – Identify, plan, and implement up-to-date EH strategies, based on current science and practice, for ensuring safety and health at regulated and permitted facilities such as hotels/motels, body art/tattoo, campgrounds, mobile home communities, cosmetology businesses.

Establishing Effective Strategies for New and Evolving EH Responsibilities – Increase EH program capacity to respond to a changing landscape for EH responsibilities by enhancing workforce capabilities and competencies, developing up-to-date protocols, and implementing evidence-based practices. These activities could be in response to responsibilities in areas related to special events and mass gatherings, regulating new food processes, roles in healthy community design, involvement in health equity, smoke-free ordinances, and land use planning.

Strengthening Healthy Homes Programs and Strategies – Increase EH program capacity to assess and address issues and exposures in the home environment. This includes hazards related to radon and mold exposures.

Increasing Health and Safety Services for Health-related Facilities – Build capacity to assess and address health and safety concerns and issues at a range of health-related facilities including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and long-term care and radiological health facilities.

Developing Waste Management Programs – Plan and implement comprehensive programs and services to manage and control solid waste, wastewater, hazardous waste, and pollution sources.

Component (C): Enhance capacity to address emerging or priority EH hazards and issues – Strengthen capacity to address specific priority or emerging EH hazards or issues such as harmful algal blooms, premise plumbing hazards, extreme weather events, and EH implications related to homelessness and other EH issues.

Potential projects in Years 2–5 include, and are not limited to:

EH approaches to reduce exposure to environmental hazards faced by people experiencing homelessness - Reduce the impacts of exposure to EH hazards faced by people experiencing homelessness by providing them necessary EH services.
